Manufacturer's Description

The classic table football game Subbuteo scores on DS! Italian game developer ARTEMATICA has faithfully recreated theoriginal tabletop football game on the Nintendo handheld, making full use of the Dual Screen functionality. Using the finger-flick icon on the screen, the player can choose the angle and power of the kick just like the real thing. The upper screen gives real time feedback on all the match action with fouls, goals and even those all-important aerobatic shots.

Fully customisable Tournaments and Traditional Leagues are available, as well as a powerful game editor, allowing gamers to create new teams and change player names and colours. comprehensive tutorial mode provides all the information on learning the basics along with the official Subbuteo rules. Taking the game beyond the single player mode, Subbuteo players can challenge other players in a multiplayer game using the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Only Time I've Disliked Subbuteo..., 14 Sep 2008
By Mr. BS Kennard "Cockerspecs" (Sheffield) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Having spent many Saturday afternoons playing Subbuteo when I was younger, I was delighted to hear that the many misspent hours of my youth could be brought back when I found out Subbuteo was coming onto the DS.

In theory, Subbuteo would work on the DS. The touch screen suggested you'd be able to flick the players around the pitch with ease and best of all, there was no chance of breaking the players or arguing if a shot went in or not with your best mate.

However, I was wrong. Not only are the graphics shockingly poor (it appeared the publishers used most of the memory on the card on a fancy intro video), though I suppose the optimist would claim them to be "retro" (of course...), but the game play is incredibly tedious and slow.
Rather than using the stylus to flick the players around the screen, you have to direct the players using the d-pad, attempt some ridiculous curve (using the L + R buttons) and then use the stylus to press an on-screen button to launch the player. That's all the touch-screen is virtually good for - pressing a button to launch a player. No flicking involved really. Thus, this makes the play shockingly slow (slower than the real game) and unless you're bored witless, it's unlikely you'll get round to finishing a game (either that or your DS battery will go flat).

In terms of features, there aren't really any. Customising a team is simply changing a team name and changing a kit. There aren't any leagues, just some international teams such as Saudi Arabia and South Korea (I don't remember anyone ever fighting over being either of them when the original game was at its peak).

I would've given this 1 star, but I still hold the Subbuteo franchise in high regard (despite this attempt), hence the 2 stars. Definitely not worth the RRP, let alone £20... I would suggest avoiding this game (rather than being lumbered with it like me due to little comeback with DS games) or if you're still keen, wait a while for the price to drop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad eyes, sore head., 26 Oct 2008

I actually quite enjoy this game. Ok, so the lack of a real league as such is a slight drawback (hence the loss of a star). You can change the team names, have a different colour kit (altho when you are top down on the game it is usually viewed as a red, blue, yellow or whatever - large dot)and the league is actually a group then knock-out World Cup, and the AI teams are rather good without being impossible to beat and keeps the game challenging enough.

Speak as I find, I played the damn game for hours the first time have had many a two player game since. Not one of the most graphically challenged games you will find out there, but well worth your spare £14.

1.0 out of 5 stars Give it the flick, 14 Oct 2009

This is a pretty rubbish game. I guess I bought it at a weak moment for some kind of nostalgic reason, but ended up wasting my money. Poor graphics, tedious gameplay, dull competitions.... run an iron over your baize from the 70's and glue some of those players back together - you will have a better time.
