Michagan-based ambient post-rockers Windy & Carl make a welcome return after 2 years with a new 70minute tour-de-force of dreamy shoe-gazing soundscapes which, uniquely, feature vocals in several tracks. Formed around the core husband-and-wife duo of guitarist Carl Hultgren and bassist/singer Windy Weber, `Songs for the Broken Hearted' sees the couple in more of an introspective mood, focusing on the trials and tribulations of love. Started in early 2007 and finished in the spring of 2008 in the midst of sudden inspiration, the duo tenderly undertake an atmospheric journey into the sonic interpretation of those emotions that run the gamut from pain, anger and longing, to warmth, admiration and joy.

Through-out the 10 tracks, sheet upon sheet of drone-laden melodica wafts like some kind of slow-motion lava ooze- engulfing you in a anesthetized state of numbness whilst hypnotizing you with its glistening tentacles of heart-wrenching ambient post-rock beauty. Continuing with their successful formula of progressive texturing, songs like the depressive `La Douleur' and the engulfing 'Rhodes' sees swells of feedback heavy six-string guitar manipulations coalesce into giant walls of sound which bob wave-like whilst occasional shards of shimmering melodica penetrate the deep, oozing surface. Breaking up these engulfing pieces of slowcore are softer post-apocalypse fok-ballads which pick up where the likes of `Prasion' era Labradford and Low left-off. Featuring Windy's resonant vocals and cleaner guitar strums that bead and glisten with a sense of hopeless melancholy over a bed of smoky drone, tracks like `My Love', `Champion' and the haunting `Forever' cast an ominous cloud upon a once glorious landscape. Like thick smoke, the murky aesthetic of these dark neo-folk narratives penetrate deep into the mindset sending listeners into a lull that is fraught with uneasy emotion.

Ultimately, at its core, `Songs for the Broken Hearted' is traditional Windy & Carl with its engrossing tapestry of swelling guitar and bass drone. What is different though is the somber and reflective mood portrayed by way of tender and poignant neo-folk ballads which capture an extremely intimate sensation of perturbed emotion. It literally makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and remain stood up for some hours after the disc stops spinning. (KS)
