Amazon.co.uk Review
Whether you consider plants a source of terror or not will ultimately determine how you feel about the grisly horror movie The Ruins, but director Carter Smith and his cast and crew certainly give their all in bringing the chills of Scott Smith's novel to the big screen. Jena Malone (Saved) and Shawn Ashmore (the X-Men franchise) are the name actors in a pair of American couples down Mexico way who are ambushed by hostile Mayans and forced to the top of an ancient temple, where a monstrous and diabolically clever entity awaits them. Director Smith and his talented crew (which includes cinematographer Darius Khondji of Se7en fame and composer Graeme Revell) create a visually impressive spookshow but can't quite deliver genuine suspense (gore, however, is handled capably), and Scott Smith's script boils away much of the character development and mounting terror in his book, which also strands the likeable cast. The movie's monster, so alarming and imaginative in the original novel, is likely to provoke as many laughs as screams from filmgoers, especially when it reveals its unique talent. --Paul Gaita

3.0 out of 5 stars Three and a half for effort., 23 Nov 2008

I missed out on seeing this at the cinema which I thought was a shame at the time, but having now seen it in dvd, I would class this as a film to be enjoyed on a sick day or on a rainy saturday/sunday afternoon.

Certainly it's not original- annoying yanks head to Mexico, try to do something different and end up being terrorized by killer plants. Let's face it, how many American actors must there be waiting in the wings prepared to play the same boring role of beefy guy and blond girl, all of whom you realise are destined to die a nasty death. However, that aside, there are some genuinely scary moments in this film and it is the not the turkey other reviewers might have you believe.

But, next time you are in Mexico, if you hear a phone ringing in some ivy, avoid at all costs!

Worth a watch, but rent rather then buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible!, 31 Oct 2008

Two young couples are on holiday in Mexico and on their last day they decide to have a look at a secret archaeological dig of some ancient ruins. When they get there they are trapped by local villagers, threatening them with guns and bows, so the couples take refuge in the ruins. What they don't expect is...killer plants!

I mean, come on! How ridiculous can a film get!? Talking, killing plants - haha!

There is literally nothing I can possibly think of to recommend this film to anyone. The plot is stupid and very dull, the characters are extremely annoying and unlikeable, the picture is so dark for most of the film it's difficult to actually see what is going on. All I can say is avoid this film at all costs! I've heard the book is better, but I can't imagine that would be a very difficult achievement. One star seems too generous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic! Not just 'the killer plant movie'. , 26 Oct 2008

I've just finished watching it, and can now officially say that The Ruins absolutely rules! After reading the book, I was really excited when I found out it was being made into a film... The Ruins happens to be (arguably) one of those rare cases in which the film is actually better than the book.

A group of six soon-to-be-famous faces are on holiday, and instead of following the crowds to all the tourist-traps, they decide to go off the beaten track and explore an ancient Mayan ruin. As soon as they get there, they find themselves surrounded by murderous tribes' people, with only the one option of escaping up the ruin and wait for help. They soon realize that it's not the tribes' people they have to worry about...

The suspense throughout the film -as mentioned on the DVD case- is absolutely unbearable. You're constantly on the edge of your seat as you watch the group trying to cope with being trapped by the ever-gathering tribes below, and their slow realization of something a great deal more horrific... There's never a dull moment- the film dives straight into the action and just doesn't stop!

Some people won't like the film due to the fact that, much like Saw, it doesn't really go anywhere: It's more psychological (but the set is utterly wonderful- that great mix between scary and beautiful). So, for fans of chases and fights the film is unlikely to deliver. However, aside from this one 'flaw', The Ruins has a lot more to offer: It's totally crammed full of splatter, gore, cringe-worthy moments and amazingly intense scare sequences.

The first time director plays everything a little bit safe, but that doesn't really matter. I'd say that the film is actually quite beautiful visually, every scene is drenched in a very warm, sweaty color scheme- you could get a sun-tan just watching it! Also, as mentioned in another review: The acting is very, very good. So many horror films suffer from silly, emotionless acting, but I think that this is where The Ruins excelled.

Some people have really big issues about the ending to The Ruins, but to be honest: I really don't know why: It's brilliant! Just when you've reached the point of, 'How much more of this can I take?' the film races towards an incredible and heart-pounding climax. I'm a massive fan of amazing climaxes, and The Ruins was certainly no exception: I was literally shouting 'RUN! COME ON! RUN! RUN!' at the screen.

To summarize, The Ruins is everything you could possibly wish for if you're looking for a fun night in. There's enough severed limbs and pealing skin to satisfy any gore hounds, but also, there's enough genuinely frightening moments to satisfy anybody in search of a really good scare. Topped off with an utterly exhilarating climax, The Ruins will not disappoint. It's definitely one of the top 50 horror films ever! Go on, buy it now -or at least rent it.
