Product Description

Album Description

* The Phantom Limb sound is an indefinable blend of classic southern soul and country blues. They blend modern songwriting and rich acoustic music with powerful gospel-inflected vocals. Already comparisons are being made to Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklin and The Band. Their honest, melancholic, Bristolian edge creates one of the most original and compelling new propositions of recent years. * The self-titled debut album was the brainchild of Robot Club production team, whose recent writing/production credits also include Will Young, Skin (Skunk Anansie) and Fortune Drive. The album was recorded at their very own Robot Club Studios (Bristol) as well as Rockfields Studio (Monmouth) and Caveman Studios (Bristol). The album was mastered and cut for vinyl at Optimum Studios, Bristol by Shawn Joseph and Timothy Dennen.

About the Artist

* The group are epitomised by the fantastically bold yet intimately soulful vocals of Yolanda Quarty. The young 23-year-old has already experienced a world-tour fronting Massive Attack and provided vocals on half of MA's hotly tipped forthcoming album (due late 08), the majority of which was incidentally co-written and produced by Robot Club (PL's guitarist Stew Jackson and bassist Dan Brown). * This six-piece's unique sound has made an instant ascension within the industry. In March 2008 they played the famous SXSW in Austin, Texas, which led to countless festival offers including Glastonbury's Jazz World Stage in June 2008 and a record deal with Naim Edge! * The bands line-up represents the pick off Bristol's vibrant, almost incestuous music scene, including Dan Moore on keys (Elevator Suite/Cousteau/Andy Sheppard), Matt Jones on drums (Nuge/Emily Breeze), Luke Cawthra on lead guitar (Emily Breeze/Lena Rez/Nuge), alongside Yolanda Q (Bugs In The Attic), Stew (Milk with Ian Matthews, now of Kasabian) and Dan B (Ilya/Elevator Suite).

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Tingles from Phantom Limb, 8 Sep 2008
By Tim C (Frome, UK) - See all my reviews
This is a gem! It is a rare pleasure to find a debut album of such quality, maturity and musicianship. Its only two weeks since I first heard `Don't Say a Word' on the radio and the initial impact of the voice of Ms Quarty is still fresh in my mind - more Ann Peebles or Candi Staton than Aretha to my ears - but of an emotional and dynamic range that bears comparison to these golden throats.

The first thing I did was to look at their MySpace site where I not only found more great songs but also that they were playing a gig at my local pub the following Sunday. So I duly joined about 30 others (and a dog) for an absolute treat and came away quite stunned and excited and clutching this CD. I've played it (several times) daily and I'm blown away by what I hear - not only the voice that first drew me in but also the beautiful playing of the band and - most of all - the songs. All 10 of them have been written by the band (no individual credits but who is writing these words?) and as well as some that you will love from the first hearing - the very soulful `Withering Bones' or the more country flavoured `My Love Has Gone' - there are songs here that go beyond the bounds of these genres and whose delights are more slowly revealed. `Playing With Death' has a velvet darkness that deepens with familiarity and the rich textures of `Spring Flowers' are increasingly beguiling.

Ultimately there are only two genres of music - good and bad - and if it moves your soul and your body it belongs in your good file. This album has quickly gone into the favourites section of that file for me, so many thanks to all those involved in its creation. And if you are yet to discover this music give yourself a treat and click that buy button now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't say a Word.. well maybe a few, 2 Sep 2008

Ah, the sweet soothing sounds of Phantom Limb. It sounds like real life, like all the heartaches and fears, the laughter, joy and tears of being alive, a rare thing in these days of dehydrated pop.
This album is a friend, a well worn book whose pages I want to re-read again and again. It gives me the feeling of sinking my feet deep into the dirt, rooted and honest.
Listen to it on Myspace.
Buy it because it soothes you in the way music should.
Love it because you can't fail to.

4.0 out of 5 stars A complete treat but quite filling, 14 Jul 2009
By J. A. Ingram (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This superb outing by the Bristolian hybrid between country, soul, gospel and rock is well worth a listen. The featured vocals and dramatic style entrance you from the start with stunning musicianship and considered and well thought out arrangements. However I must confess to a slight amount of listener fatigue towards the end as the shear scale of the pieces had me longing for a frothy hook or quirky chorus.
In general, superb pieces beautifully performed, sympathetically produced and fantastically recorded (well deserving to be on the Naim label) but best appreciated if you don't take it all in one sitting.

JI
