Synopsis

Filmed on location in Italy, TV mini-series EMPIRE begins with Julius Caesar's assassination, and the passing of his power to his nephew Octavius. At only 18 years old, Octavius plunges head-on into a fierce fight for his place as Rome's rightful leader. With an all-star cast including Emily Blunt (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA), James Frain (THE TUDORS), Vincent Regan (300), Fiona Shaw (HARRY POTTER) and Santiago Cabrera (HEROES), stunning production design and thrilling action sequences, EMPIRE perfectly captures the epic drama of ancient Rome.

1.0 out of 5 stars Highly dubious, 3 Sep 2008

Although entertaining this mini series seems to be based on more fiction than fact.

The worrying aspect is that nowadays many people get their whole history from this type of media

5.0 out of 5 stars There's no place like Rome., 18 Aug 2008

Empire [2005]

Actually I enjoyed EMPIRE more than "Rome". The cast put on a wonderfully engaging performance and the gladiator fights were immense in there energy and realism. A thoroughly rewarding viewing experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, 24 Dec 2008
I never watched this when it was on the telly, so I thought I would give it a go as I love all things Roman; I remember at the time reading about how authentic and great this mini-series was, how the sets were superb and there was even talk of it being better than Rome, but I have never seen anything so cringe-worthy or badly acted as this.
Episode 1 starts with the gladiator Tyrannus preparing for a fight and Julius Caesar returning from Gaul, so far so good, but then Octavius turns up and everything just goes wrong, the plot becomes predictable, boring and unbelievable, Ocatvian acts like a brat throughout every episode and it is extremely annoying.
The acting is bad, but what surprises me most is that there are credible actors in this: Emily Blunt, James Frain and Fiona Shaw.
The set's are ok, nothing spectacular, the houses and rooms in which scenes take place are more reminiscent of Victorian buildings with high ceilings and alot of brick work; the room in which Caesar is laid in state looks like a Victorian church!
Then there are the outdoor scenes, the landscape is supposed to have been filmed in Italy but I'm not so sure as it all looks too dreamy, fields that are over-green and the sky is always a perfect golden-blue colour, I'm sure that living standards in antiquity weren't nearly as good as portrayed in this.
Tyrannus (Jonathan Cake) looks as if he's not sure he's on the right set, he looks like he's just finished doing a photo-shoot for some catalogue and Emily Blunt's voice-overs are laughable. Just when things can't get any worse Dennis Haysbert comes along playing a centurion with an American accent!
The DVD layout is also very poor, there are no special features and you can't even select a scene as it just plays the whole episode, so if (like me) you've lost your DVD remote, you have to sit there and watch the whole episode again!
The problem is, Rome has set such a high standard making it hard to be bettered, so watch that instead of this rubbish.
