Fresh young folk, 5 Feb 2009
I purchased this CD after seeing the lads perform at Oxford Folk Festival, where their talent managed to effortlessly shine through some unfortunate technical problems with their live sound set up. I have played the CD repeatedly since and its a firm favourite. These are talented young musicians playing folk with a fresh lively approach, and accompanied by Jim Causley's melodically resonant voice. The track Come my Lads is inspired and well worth buying this CD for. Can't wait for their next collection of songs.

A TASTE OF GREAT THINGS TO COME.. don't miss this limited cd, 23 Jul 2008
`Cold Ruin' is the limited edition debut mini album from exciting English folk group Mawkin:Causley.
It's set for release on Navigator Records on Aug 4th.
Mawkin:Causley are brothers James and David Delarre, Danny Crump, Alex Goldsmith and acclaimed singer Jim Causley. Together, they merge west to east (from Essex, Suffolk and Devon), tunes and songs played with attitude - the result breathing youthful vigour and energy into folk- inspired music.
Mawkin have now played over 50 UK festivals and have supported a range of well-regarded artists including Eliza Carthy, Shooglenifty, Show of Hands, Billy Bragg, Mr Scruff and more besides.
"One of the best instrumental outfits to emerge in recent years" - Channel 4 Online
The band met at a Folk Festival in 2003, when the average age of Mawkin band members was barely 17 years old. Local boy Jim Causley, already a well regarded singer, was also there. Mawkin had been looking for a vocalist but finding someone who could fit into what had already become a tightnit group was proving difficult. However, when Jim was heard singing in his distinctive, clear and rich voice, as well as being seen drinking beer and having fun, the band knew that one day he'd be ideal for them. In 2007 they finally joined forces.
In the intervening years instrumentalist's Mawkin self- released a debut album `The Fair Essex' (Good Form Records/2006).
On the strength of the reception to that release and their growing reputation as live performers who know how to win an audience, Mawkin, have now built up a strong and loyal following. Combining their considerable forces with the acclaimed BBC folk Award nominee and ex Devils Interval star Jim Causley in their ranks, they are all poised for much bigger things.
The brand new Mawkin :Causley went into the studio in 2008 with Stu Hanna (Megson, Faustus) to record `Cold Ruin', an energetic and vibrant set of songs, also capable of great subtlety. A full length album will follow in February 2009 also on Navigator Records.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of opportunities to catch the exciting live show across a range of Festivals and special events throughout the summer and autumn.
