Synopsis

Directed by Pierre Salvadori, this delightful French comedy features AMELIE star Audrey Tautou and the charming Gad Elmaleh (THE VALET). Jean (Elmaleh) is a hardworking employee at one of southern France's elite resort hotels. He is known for his excellent work ethic, but that changes after a chance encounter with sexy hotel guest Irene (Tautou). Bored with her wealthy and much older boyfriend/benefactor, Irene is looking for some excitement. She finds it with Jean, whom she believes to be another guest at the hotel. When she discovers that he is merely an employee there, she is furious, and wants nothing more to do with him. Jean tries to rekindle their affair, but Irene lets him know that she is only interested in men with money--lots and lots of money. Jean is broke and broken-hearted, until he crosses paths with another hotel guest--this one an older woman of considerable means. He soon finds himself living the high life alongside Irene and her own rich patron. But Jean is far more interested in romance than in riches, and the glitzy fun and games quickly come to a head.

The film makes the most of its dazzling location, luxuriating in the wealth and beauty of the French Riviera. The story obviously owes a firm tip of the hat to BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY's, and indeed Tautou's effortless grace and style do bring to mind Ms. Hepburn. In the hands of less skilled actors, the plot could have felt a bit flimsy, but Tautou and Elmaleh are so engaging, one can't help but root for them and their romantic hi-jinks.

5.0 out of 5 stars truly delightful French romcom, 13 Oct 2008
By D&D - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This elegant adult romcom reminded me of the very best old classics, like Breakfast at Tiffany's and How to Marry a Millionaire. Morally ambiguous, this sharp and pointed film is highly amusing fluff about the vanity of wealthy voluptuaries and the gold-diggers who buzz around them. It is a total delight and the best type of French comedy.

It matches beautiful locations with equally stunning views and stars an accomplished actress most have yet to discover. Excellent production with great performances and wonderful direction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Keep your change in your pocket, 8 Aug 2009
By Peter Roxburgh (Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews

I love Audrey Tautou. I love French humour. Amelie, Le Dinér de Cons, Taxi 1 & 2 etc.

Both my wife and I eagerly anticipated this DVD as the trailer looked funny and quirky.

However, it really was quite a disappointment. Audrey plays her character well and convincingly. It was a pleasant enough script but no laugh-out-loud moments at all. Some bits made one smile but otherwise not particularly funny, which is a shame because it seemed like it had so much more potential.

However, if you are unwell and really need a movie that doesn't require brain-power but will make you smile then this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless film!, 8 Oct 2008
By saz (Scotland) - See all my reviews
I have just seen this film at the cinema and can't rate it highly enough. Even my partner who doesn't exactly share my love of French movies and came along under duress enjoyed it (helped I suspect by the stunning Audrey Tautou!).

You can't help but warm to the characters despite their dubious 'profession' and the film is sharp, genuinely funny and warm without any Hollywood syrupyness or sexing up. A special mention has to go to Gad Elmaleh who was perfect as the endearing and enduring (and gorgeous) Jean.

A genuine romantic comedy without the dreadful girly/meg ryan-esque/hollywood connotations if that makes sense!
You dont have to be into French cinema to love this, but if you like Amelie, Audrey Tautou or just good movies then I'd recommend this.
