Synopsis
Writer-director Mitchell Lichtenstein's feature debut is a horror comedy combining elements of atom-age 1950s horror films with mythology and feminist theory. The result is a smart, sassy B-movie satire--funny, gross, and with a high squirm factor. A risky idea that could well have turned into a lower-tier Troma production, TEETH is a unique and surprising creation. Dawn (Jess Weixler) lives the life of a normal suburban teenager, except for the two nuclear reactors looming over her house. A goody two-shoes by any measure, she leads the local chapter of a chastity group, lecturing younger children on saving themselves for marriage. She finds herself stirred in unexpected ways, however, by new member Tobey (Hale Appleman). Dawn lets herself get closer to him than she has to anyone else, but when he rapes her, she discovers---in the most grisly way---that she is a true incarnation of the vagina dentata myth. As Dawn attempts to come to terms with her emerging sexuality and her second set of choppers, more men with bad intentions fall victim to their worst nightmare.

Lichtenstein, sometime actor and the son of artist Roy Lichtenstein, reportedly first heard of the vagina dentata myth while studying under Camille Paglia, and his take on it proves to be as frightening (and bloody) as one would expect. As Dawn, Weixler is winning, and watching her transformation from meek to empowered bitch is a blast to watch. A handful of wincingly gory sequences will have horror fans howling, but there are layers to the film for those willing to peel them back. Cult favourite GINGER SNAPS, which examined menstruation as a metaphor for lycanthropy, is an obvious cousin and great candidate for a double feature, but TEETH is completely its own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyably quirky, but it's just too odd., 16 Jul 2008

Teeth is destined to be the most talked about film of the year.

By now, anybody searching for this item will know what it's about. It's every man's nightmare. Basically, due to living very close to a toxic power plant, a sweet little blonde girl begins to grow an extra set of teeth... but not in her mouth.

Get ready for lots of screaming, passing out and bloody stumps.

Teeth is ultimately a one joke film. It's like the writers thought of the idea but didn't know where to take it, therefore Teeth doesn't have much of a plot. The acting is OK, but never quite believable, and the direction is fine.

As scary and gruesome as it is hilarious and twisted, Teeth hits the spot pretty well. At the end of the day, 'It does exactly what it says on the tin.'

"Teeth" is the story of a young woman named Dawn who finds that she has a pair of teeth in the most unexpected place.

I didn't think I'd like this film but surprisingly I did. It's definitely one not to be taken seriously and is not your standard run-of-the-mill horror. The characters are all very over the top but it does fit well with the film's style. There are enough laugh-out-loud funny moments as well as many cringe-worthy gory scenes (especially for the guys) so both horror and comedy fans should enjoy this.

A recommended rent rather than buy as I can't imagine you'd watch it more than once.

2.0 out of 5 stars An oral-b grade movie., 28 Mar 2009

Who would have thought that a film mixing Vagina Denteta folklore with a coming of age scenario and throwing a bit of dysfunctional family drama in there as well could be so dull? I didn't which is why I watched Teeth . Yet I ended up fighting off sleep more than nausea as I watched male sexual organs getting chowed down on by a vagina with a set of pearly whites, though I assume they are pearly whites rather than yellowing tombstones because the audience never gets to see the offending errrr ....parts.
For which I am grateful by the way .Anyway Teeth centres on Dawn ( Jess Weixler) a virgin who preaches sexual abstinence to her fellow pupils with goggle eyed enthusiasm .Yet she has a traditional romantic view of relationships, dreaming off her wedding day and mooning over Toby ( Hale Appleman ) a fellow sexual absentee . Yet a trip to a local make out spot causes Toby to get carried away and force himself on the reluctant Dawn where her down there dental proclivities nastily reveal themselves.
Director Michael Lichnstein has made a low budget film that twists the femme fatale theme on it's head by having her even more confused and unable to control herself than her male victims. Dawn is more the injured party but her reaction is extreme and something she cannot control. The film could have been really interesting if it had built on this theme and had Dawn become completely rapacious and subservient to her condition. A feminist vigilante if you like. Yet after a promising build up the film just drags. There is zero suspense and it's not remotely scary ,and the horror scenes are dealt with in a rather cursory way. This is a real shame because Weixler is great as Dawn, giving her a gauche charm at first and then showing genuine depths of terror and confusion ,though it must be said not as much as the blokes she crosses. She deserves a better film for her performance .
The director shows some visual flair and once or twice it is wryly amusing but by taking the female perspective of something that is usually attributed to men's fear of women Teeth curiously lacks bite.
