Manufacturer's Description

The Acer Aspire One is a stylish and ultra mobile netbook, ideal for surfing the web, doing emails and messenger as well as basic computing functions like writing letters and doing simple spreadsheets. With its stunning 8.9 inch screen with built in webcam, 95% keyboard and unique yet intuitive interface, you will find the Aspire One a pleasure to use. Want one? Aspire One!

portable Ultra-portable
Weighing less than 1KG* and with dimensions that are smaller than the average diary, the Aspire One is fits into the palm of your hands, making it simple to carry by hand or even in a handbag.

Unique Aspire One Interface

One of the neatest features of the Aspire One is the unique operating system which is created on Linux Linplus. This simple-to-use system is based on clear icons, similar to a mobile phone system, which are launched by simply clicking on them, which makes it intuitive to use and simple to master.

Linplus Linux

Your primary interface is separated into 4 clear segments, Connect, Work, Fun and Files that combine to give you access to a whole host of tools to ensure you make the most of your mobility.

Connect Connect:
The Aspire One puts your favourite communication programs right on the home screen so you’re ready to connect to the web, email or chat on messenger within seconds of turning it on.

Work Work
For people who want to stay productive on the move, the Work section on the Aspire One has built in software that allows you to do everything from writing letters and doing basic spreadsheets to running a presentation. In the work section you can also access your contacts list, a calculator and a notes pad, giving you the flexibility you need.

Fun Fun
What would life be like without some fun? Whether it is watching a movie, listening to music or playing one of the exciting games already installed, the Aspire One will keep you entertained on the go.

Files Files
The files section of the interface gives you the ability to copy, share or access your files and folders simply and logically ensuring you are always in control.

Design Stylish Design
The Aspire One is an elegant and stylish netbook that features a stunning gloss cover in either seashell white or sapphire blue colours, so you can pick the version that suits your style and your personality.

Easy to Use Easy to Use
One of the key aspects to any Netbook is the keyboard size, too small and you can’t use it properly, too big and the whole system needs to be made bigger. Acer has managed to get a 95% keyboard into its 8.9 inch netbook, one of the largest for the size, making this netbook a pleasure to type on.

Connectivity Connectivity
Connectivity is vital with a netbook, both to the internet and to other devises. For strong internet connectivity Acer has both wired and wireless internet connectivity options. To connect to other devises there are 3 USB ports as well as VGA output and sharing data between devises is easy with the built in multicard reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small is sometimes beautiful, 12 Nov 2008
By D. Hayes "bookman" (bookman) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Purchased one of these (1GB, 120GB version) last week and it arrived yesterday and I must say I think it's great. Not only does it look cool it's really easy to get running and use. Wireless connection was a breeze and basically the thing just works straight out of the box.

To test it out I played some MP3's and tried it with the BBC's iPlayer and it worked perfectly (with headphones anyway, the built in speakers are very poor).

The web cam, contrary to some reviews, is actually really good, I tried it out with the built in messenger and was chatting with my daughter on MS Messenger in no time. As the boot up is so quick the Acer One is the ideal way to stay in touch with friends and family.

The operating system looks a bit childish and it's very restrictive when you're used to using something like WinXP.
Also the noise from the fan is quite loud for the size of the unit. And as everyone has probably commented, the battery is pretty dismal at around 2.5 hrs.

But overall if you want something to surf the net, read emails, write documents and all the basic stuff that most of use our PC's for while your on the move and you've got another PC for the heavy stuff, this gizmo is great.
It's light, compact, cool looking, quick to boot-up and good value, what more could you ask for.

Update 12th Dec:- still loving this machine but have now put windows XP on it as the Linux became a bit of drag, just making a shortcut is a major job.
With XP on the other hand it's turned it from a little netbook to a cool little laptop. Still boots up in seconds, it's a great little machine. If you're wondering whether to buy or not I would definitely say buy it you wont be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light and lovely, 11 Sep 2008
By S. Mitchell "Ishmael" (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought the Acer Aspire One a couple of days ago and so far it's been brilliant. Small and light enough to carry around easily but with enough applications to cover nearly all travelling needs - note-taking, essay-writing, diary, spreadsheets etc. It connected to the internet without any problems and set up my email address in less than a minute. I do wish it had skype though. I hadn't used Linux before and didn't realise I wouldn't be able to download and run skype. I thought that was why they'd included the webcam! Unless you're pretty computer literate it doesn't seem possible to get it working - even the official linux forum doesn't help as they're all struggling with it.
I'd like to add a mouse as I can never work comfortably with a touch pad, but am a bit worried about downloading a mouse driver for linux.
Unless you're happy to fiddle around with the programming it might be better to go for the Windows XP version.
Overall the Aspire is great for those who want a machine that's easy to work with and light enough to carry in a handbag!

4.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB LITTLE BOX - NEARLY PERFECT, 28 Aug 2008
By Craig Alexander (Rutland, England) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Got my AAO 1gig 120gb yesterday and so far pretty happy. Feels well made and works well. Loaded up to my home wireless network with no issues.
Only gripe would be to ask why they did not pre load Skype. For such a portable device, with inbuilt mike and webcam I am sure this will be a main use for the thing for most people so it seams daft not to include the most commonly used free software to make it work. Took me all afternoon to load up (or rather find once downloaded) the Skype software. However now that it is in, it works fine (although I am still to find a way to put a shortcut for it on the desktop or bottom bar).
I have never used anything other than Windows, but the Linux OS supplied is totally intuative and programmes virtually identical (the spreadsheet is an Excel 'twin separated at birth' sort of affair!) The smallish keyboard is very easy to use - certainly no more awkward than most normal sized laptops.
I have not been able to get any music on it yet that the OS recognises but am sure it will not be impossible.
4 out of 5 soley because of awkwardness of adding software such as skype but I am sure I will get the hang of it after a while.
