Product Description

CD Description

There's not a whole lot of bands out there like O'Death, who've concocted a rousing, violent, joyful, and hedonistic mix of country, punk, Appalachian folk, and bluegrass. BROKEN HYMNS packs the most punch during those moments where their hardcore roots are most abundant (i.e., the back-to-back stomp of "Mountain Shifts" and "Vacant Moan"). But what ultimately keeps LIMBS together is the balanced inclusion of mournful nomad ballads like "Home" and fiddle-heavy hoedown revelries like "Ratscars." HYMBS, LIMBS AND SKIN is a perfect complement for any night of booze, brawling, and basking in goodtimes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dirty, dark, deadly . . ., 7 Sep 2009
By slainbyanelf (Dublin, Eire) - See all my reviews
A dark, mad, barely-controlled slab of Appalachian fiddle-punk. The Nick Cave-esque lyrics lurch from grim to apocalyptic, the vocals are a suitably wounded whine and the see-sawing violin squall is a twisted triumph. Unless you live in a mountainside cabin based designed by Cormac McCarthy, this isn't the type of thing you're going to listen to at a party, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. The only downside, for me, is that the album doesn't quite capture the sound and vibe of O'Death live, which, honestly, is the best way to experience this band. Still, it's well worth picking up this album, getting to know the songs, then finding out when O'Death are next playing your town. Best of both worlds.
