The first thing that grabs you about this movie is that it has 3 directors all well-renowned in their own-right(especially Tsui Hark). The story unfolds in 3 thirty minute segments.

It is about 3 guys Fei, Sam and Mok who are in desperate need of some cash. One day they are approached by a myseterious man and he sends them on a path to so-called riches of buried treasure.

Anyway, this all plays out well, but somewhere in-between it gets a little abstract. The story itself is simple, but it never really grabbed my attention. There's just no development or focus to what is going on or the characters involved. I mean the 3 friends hardly know each other at all. They have nothing in common outside of money worries and none of them grabbed me as one to root for. Their relationships are never explored or expanded and frankly I didn't really care about them. The story is a "mish-mash". It goes from a treasure hunt to a gangster movie, to running over pedestrians, to one of the guy's wife having an affair with a dodgy cop. None of this, is ever explored in detail.

Triangle's biggest problem lies here-in. Far too much going on within each character's set up, that you just don't know what to feel about it. In my first run through of the movie I didn't even understand how I came to the closing scene (I had to watch it again to try and comprehend what was going on).

I sometimes suspect maybe the directors were just having a laugh while making this movie and at times I felt I must have missed the plot altogether.
The movie was just bizarre, I watch allot of Hong Kong cinema and this sits there in my top ten list of bizarre movies. The standoff near the end is just loony.

Three directors, three main characters, lots of tangents, oddness, and unpredictability. If you don't keep your eye on the ball you might lose the thread of the game. If this film were a mathematical equation it would be a fussy one. The script is all over the place, along with the characters and a bunch of incidentals who muddy things further. The core of the matter is pretty straightforward, but nipping out to put the kettle on or get a beer could result in future confusion. But what of the film? The direction is mosaic, the acting sound, the conflict of ideas entertaining, the action frequent (bit too bluntly violent for a 12 certificate?), the camera work and atmospherics adequate, the whole thing more barking than a basket of badgers. It has a certain originality, so I'd recommend it for something different.

A veritable directorial relay race, with Hong Kong directors Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To each taking a half hour section of the picture before passing on the baton, Triangle never seems like a patchwork quilt but also rarely rises above the watchably average. Rather than the usual collection of short stories you get when multiple directors collaborate on a single film it's one continuous story, revolving around a trio of losers caught up in a caper that inevitably goes wrong. Simon Yam's a failing businessman who might just be poisoning his unfaithful wife for the insurance money (or she might just be setting him up), Louis Koo is a taxi driver with a trio of nasty gangsters on his tail when he fails to provide them with a getaway driver and Sun Hong Lei is an antiques dealer whose share dealings have failed disastrously. When a stranger puts them on the trail of a mysterious treasure buried under the legislative building, you know it's not so much the end of their problems as the beginning of them...

To the film's credit, the shifts in directorial style aren't glaringly obvious. Tsui Hark handles the setup, City On Fire's Ringo Lam provides the intriguing middle act that once again sees an injured cop handcuffed in a warehouse while Yam's domestic drama is played out in largely unexpected ways, while To wraps it up in a series of standoffs and mixups that's even more dependent on coincidence than the end of PTU. It's a film with good moments, some strong performances and some nice touches, but everyone concerned has done better work, leaving it a film that will probably appeal most to the very people it's most likely to disappoint. Certainly worth a look, and Manga's 2.35:1 widescreen DVD has a fine transfer (though no extras other than trailers for other releases), but no classic.

This is my first foray into Hong Kong cinema but not my first into world cinema. Three directors with approximately 30 mins each sounds like a recipe for disaster and a previous reviewer summed it up perfectly;too many cooks have spoilt this Chinese broth. The first hour is quite stylish and entertaining. It's a well photographed film,nicely framed and quite atmospheric showing a side of Hong Kong I've only ever imgined outside of the usual harbour shot. It's a realistic enough portrayal with some of the dialogue a bit banal and not Hollywood slick scripting. The violence was contained and credible with none of that "Matrix" king fu. One thing I particularly liked was that one of the bad guys got injured (it even looked genuine) in pursuit of one of the main characters when he landed on a table from a great height;instead of carrying on unscathed he just lay there.

The plot is simple enough - dig up treasure, loose treasure, try to recover treasure. Two out of three weren't bad namely the digging and losing. The recovery however killed this film if that's not a contradiction in terms. It becomes very obvious that a different director has taken over after an hour. The previous 60 minutes complimented each other and blended well. The last segment however just sank into preposterous absurdity and I actually skipped back a few frames thinking I'd lost conscousness and missed a huge segment of the film. The lead female character having been run over by a speeding car 5 minutes previously is miraculously recovered without a cut or a bruise. We are then introduced to a character who looks and acts as if he's been a contestant on Takeshi's Castle (Japanese I know) about 100 times too many because he's completely strange.Read more ›
