Product Description

CD Description

Arguably the most vibrant and verbose lyricist out of the Wu, the Gza returns with his extraordinary fifth solo album, PRO TOOLS. Rather than recycling the winning formula of LIQUID SWORDS, the Genius and Co. have updated their attack strategy. The trademark Shaolin soul loops are still there, along with dramatic orchestral arrangements, but the Gza's flow is even more elevated than usual; with old-school cadences, his tone is laidback slick even while the rhymes paint incredibly vivid street narratives. The emphasis is on good old-fashioned storytelling here, as the man who penned such classics as "Labels" and "Publicity" mixes superb extended metaphors ("0% Finance", "Short Race") with multiple cautionary hood tales ("Path of Destruction", "Colombian Ties"). Still, the most intriguing cut might be "Paper Plate"--a subtle but relentless dis-track aimed squarely at 50 Cent. Ironically, the post-Wu era has also brought the Gza back to his low-budget roots with grimy basement beats courtesy of Bronze Nazareth, Dreddy Kruger, Mathematics, True Master, and the Rza. PRO TOOLS is a worthy challenge to Ghostface for the crown ofhottest Wu Tang alum.

1.0 out of 5 stars GZA fell off a long time ago, 7 May 2009
By Jaymz (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Yeah he fell off a long time ago. This album is whack.

I wasn't expecting much due to him being a massive disappointment on basically everything he has done in solo form since after Liquid Swords.

Yeas there are 1, 2 or 3 "Ok" tracks, but that isn't even anywhere near enough to make a good album.

Once again GZA, you fail, as you failed at your Glasgow gig in November 08. You performed with no passion and only Killa Priest saved the performance, an MC who is on his game, even now.

Leave this album alone, it might even put you off GZA's and even Wu's earlier work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Frankenstein..., 2 Dec 2008
By D. Mwiinga "Ecclesiastes" (Rdg Area, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It was hard to review this album having listened to everything else that Gza has ever done. First things first, the album is not bad and neither is it good. Like me, if you have heard a lot of Gza's stuff, you will notice that this album is almost like a Frankenstein because it has so many bits and pieces borrowed from his previous stuff. The tracks are first of all not that original or creative at all as we know Gza can do, we have nothing like Fame, Animal planet, knock knock or even Breaker Breaker and secondly, the album has one too many some skip-a-ble tracks. Also, his lyricism isn't as sharp and the beats as I said are not that interesting either.

Critics were saying this is a good album but maybe I am just hard to please because I thought it fell short of what Gza can do, I even thought the album with dj Muggs had better offerings as it had tracks like Queens Gambit which were interesting and creative. Even the song titles on that album were interesting. As I said, this album is not bad, its just that it falls short, the only tracks I find myself repeating are Pencil, Short Race and Cinema. My review maybe unfair but its hard not to compare Gza's current work with the work he did before and I dont know if he can ever do anything similar to Liquid sword or even Beneath the surface. He did try to reproduce his earlier work by reusing the same samples but I dont think it quite worked.

After all that, it is not a cr*p album, it just doesnt quite live up to expectations...

5.0 out of 5 stars GENIUS GZA , 21 Nov 2008
Iv just received this album today and from the first track i was hooked, its maybe the best album of the year, seriosly its that good, every track is a different tale or story, this is as close to THE LIQUID SWORDS as u'll get,the track CINEMA is unbelivable its like entering a horror movie Gza really makes u feel the chill and there a diss track to 50 cent&g unit which is hot and makes alot of sense, the whole album is dope even the guests.Brillient album luv the whole WU and hope to see more of them ie Cuban Linx 2,peace WU TANG FOREVER
