Amazon.co.uk Review

Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter.

The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles
Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat
World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever
The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes

The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world.

Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity.

Key Features
  • Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
  • Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
  • Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
  • Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
  • Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Hello?
Anyone Out there?
I'm unused to asking, because I'm a single-player person. That is increasingly becoming a problem with the current swathe of games that are obviously aimed at multiplayer. Basically, they produce a game to be played on line, and at the last minute chuck in a few levels for the saddo Billy-No-mates out there. I feel discriminated against. Hello?
First off: this is a CoD game, so it looks excellent, and the voice-acting is consistent with the other games. The Pacific campaign is a fresh look and as usual there's just enough scope for independent action for it to seem free-flowing even though it's linear.
But it's so damned short.
The first CoD felt like a real campaign, and I still consider it one of the best FPS out there: the sheer adrenaline rush of playing the first part of the Russian campaign- advancing on the enemy without a weapon- still takes some beating, and the expansion game was just as good. That's what I judge FPS against, and especially CoD.
But now games are obviously aimed at multiplayer, and all that is gone. This is a short game, and the Russian campaign feels like a retread of the original, ending in exactly the same place: the storming of the reichstag. I kept expecting my previous avatar to wave at me; 'fancy meeting you here?'. It was an unsatisfying end to a game I'd placed so much hope on.
There are a few minor quibbles: *7£$@ng sniper was too much like a boss-level, with all your scope for independence taken away (not to mention the git shoots through solid walls) and the tanks are always too small and too fragile, but the biggest problem is that it's simply not long enough to be satisfying.
So, I'll play the game through again (in a couple of hours from beginning to end) and then I'll have the same feeling that I always get with modern games, this strange feeling that I'm missing out on the true intention to the game.
Hello?
Is there anyone out there?

Firstly i'd lik to say that all you customers who complain about the game's speed and quality, you dont have a good enough pc. I have a decent pc which is quite old now but the game still works emmaculately. I love the new factures on this game: the flame thrower, all of thee new guns and explosives, they have also brough back the TANK and of course the pure reality of it all. This game is much goryier and bloodier, but boy is it cool.
Requirments
Processor: AMD 64 3200+/Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz or better

Memory: 8 GB free hard-drive space, 512MB RAM (XP)/1GB RAM (Vista)

SINGLEPLAYER:
Call of Duty: World at War is the 5th game in the bestselling series so far. After the jump into modern warfare that Call of Duty 4 took, World At War returns to the familiar setting the series has been known for: The Second World War. Call of Duty: World At War takes place in the final stages of WW-II, and for the first time in the series, explores the Pacific theatre, where Americans and Japanese fought for control of the Pacific islands, as well as making a return to the Eastern Front, where the Russian Red Army slowly but surely turned the tide of war under immense human loss. Turning point for the Second World War was Stalingrad - and this is also where the Eastern Front part of World at War's campaign begins. Ripping the intro directly from a famous scene that was featured in the movie "Enemy At the Gates", you find yourself hidden amidst a pool of dead Soviet soldiers as German patrols and tanks pass by. Under the sound of the approaching aircraft overhead, you use the opportunity to snipe their soldiers. Elsewhere, in the Pacific Theatre, Kiefer Sutherland narrates how Americans faced conditions similar to the D-day landing as they assault one heavily fortified island after the next, trying to wrest control of them from the fiercely determined Imperial Japanese Army. Something that Treyarch could have done to make the Pacific Theatre campaign far more interesting is by having it begin with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Just imagine - the game begins with a training session similar to that in CoD 4, except it is taking place on Pearl Harbor, and then suddenly the attacks begin, and you rush to man a turret and have to start shooting down Zeros as ships begin to blow up all around you.

Just like to add my name to the chorus of unhappy, short changed customers.
Although none of us should have been surprised. When the development reigns were handed over to the team that brought us the previous worst game in the series, COD 3, it shouldn't have been a surprise this one would be as bad. Yet somehow we still expected something good but they gave us COD 3 MkII.
I've been fortunate to have no technical problems, so have no quibble there. It's just the gameplay, AI and feel to the game that annoy so much. There's no doubt this was rushed to the market in a part finished state. Level design is hopeless, some of the guns sound terrible and your AI teammates serve no purpose.
I didn't initially take to the Multiplayer. It seemed inferior to the COD 4 despite all the same menus and options. But i've adjusted now and quite enjoy it. Plus it hasn't yet been swamped with all the cheating low life you get on the COD 4 servers.
Hopefully the soon to be released v1.2 patch will be huge and bring with it a lot of improvements. But i doubt it. Activision are now full steam ahead with COD 6 Modern Warfare 2 and almost certainly lost interest in this farce.
If you can find it cheap on Ebay, then get it for the Multiplayer. Otherwise avoid!
