Product Description

Product Description

A space-race develops when a new planet is discovered on the far side of the sun, in this Gerry and Sylvia Anderson-created, effects-driven, sci-fi tale with a twist. When a new, previously unseen planet is discovered on the opposite side of the sun, 100 years in the future, a European space agency hurriedly dispatches a spaceship to investigate. But when astronauts Col. Glenn Ross (Roy Thinnes) and John Kane (Ian Hendry) are forced to crash-land, their dazed condition leads them to believe they're back on earth. It's not long, however, until they both discover the shocking truth: the undiscovered planet is actually a doppelganger of the earth, similar in every respect, but a mirror-image.

From Amazon.co.uk

There's a sense of awe to the special effects work of animation specialists Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds Are Go)--the slow, lovingly detailed introduction of a massive spaceship creeping out of dock and struggling against its bulk while trapped on the ground, and the almost balletic spectacle of the ship elegantly floating against an impressive star field or dramatically flying against the rugged landscape. These moments are the highlights of this sober science fiction thriller about the discovery of a planet on the far side of the sun in Earth's orbit. A mission is hastily put together, with British astrophysicist Ian Hendry teamed with hotshot American astronaut Roy Thinnes for the three-week trip, but when they suddenly crash-land the strange creatures that surround them are revealed to be human. Against all rational explanations they're back on Earth, but Thinnes suddenly discovers that everything is a mirror image of his existence: Through the Looking Glass by way of The Twilight Zone. Though it begins as a paranoid spy thriller set in the near future (the opening details an ingenious espionage caper featuring a very special eyepiece), it quickly turns into a serious and oddly unsettling space-race drama with a heady twist. Robert Parrish's direction is unusually aloof, but the film is always intriguing and well acted with gorgeous special effects that may rank second only to Stanley Kubrick's 2001 as the most elegant vision of outer space flight on film. --Sean Axmaker

Thoroughly enjoyable sci-fi story in that 60's vein - strangely paranoid, 'anything could happen' storylines were abundant during the cold war - we could use more of those now.
If you are a fan of Space 1999 or in particular UFO, this is a must have. A lot of familiar GA cast members are included here - including Ed Bishop - and the models and sets are classic Anderson - which is to say marvellous.
2001 it ain't, but given the popularity of the makers - I'm surprised that this little gem has stayed hidden for so long. Anderson gets pretty dark at times - and Thinnes plays it straight, adding some real drama. It's all here, really - so pleased that I got a copy.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I may well be since no other reviewer here has mentioned it) but wasn't this 'film' originally the pilot for a planned TV series called 'Doppelganger'?

I'm sure that, as a young teenager in the 1960's and hooked on Ford's UK motorsport activities, I remember reading, in the FordSport magazine, details of a forthcoming Gerry Anderson series to be called 'Doppelganger' (a German term meaning the "paranormal double of a living person" and representing the "evil/dark" side of said person).

The series was due to star Roy Thinnes and Gayle Hunnicutt and the reason I was reading about it in that Ford publication was because Ford had been asked/contracted to design one or two futuristic-looking cars (basically re-bodied cars from their existing and then-current model range in the UK) to be used in the TV series.

As everyone knows, Ford were well involved in British television- and film-making during this era, supplying unusual and bespoke vehicles (for "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "UFO" etc) as well as providing off-the-shelf cars later on for "The Sweeney", "The Professionals" and others, of course.

Anyway, I have a notion that "Doppelganger" failed to inspire Gerry Anderson's backers (Lew Grade's ITC?) at the time and the proposed series was dropped, maybe in favour of the subsequent series "UFO".

Reviewers have noted that Journey to the Far Side of the Sun resembles an 'overblown' episode of UFO and maybe the reason for this is that, once the decision had been made concerning the non-future of "Doppelganger", the lone pilot episode was the stretched into the film "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" and thus the line was drawn.

An Australian Bluray with extras is expected Summer 2015. The film itself is the one live action movie of Gerry Anderson. The plot seems to have parallels with Twilight Zone's "The Parallax" episode and is not entirely believable: when Earth rotates around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, it is impossible for another planet in the same orbit but at the other end to remain completely invisible. Near the Sun it just moves faster and must show itself. Why would electrical polarity be any different? Why not atoms inside out? Top/bottom, left/right?
Enjoyable entertainment, beautiful models by Derek Meddings and music by Barry Gray. A little slow for today's audience.

This is an excellent piece of late Sixties SF from Gerry & Sylvia Anderson. Like UFO and Space 1999 (well, season one anyway!)which followed, it provides the viewer with a blend of action and mystery. Coupling a thought provoking script with the excellent effects that had graced their Supermarionation output.

Great sixties film, from the time when people still had a sense of wonder and everything seemed possible!
Great acting and special effects for the time, coupled with the original story line make it a film worth watching even after forty years.

A great premise, a good cast: Roy Thinnes, Ian Hendry and all, but the first fifty minutes is terribly slow. The effects, for the most part, are embarrassingly unconvincing. And after the tremendous effects of 2001 A Space Oydessey.
The relationship between Roy Thinnes' character and his wife is interesting but could have been further developed.

The interrogation room is nothing short of childish. Really, did any adult think that another adult would find this believable?

When the film suddenly shifts from first gear to fourth and becomes interesting three quarters of the way through, it highlights the poor sense of pace of the film. Just when it begins to get interesting the film finishes. The end scene is flat, thin. Ultimately a good premise and good actors let down by a poor script.

I bought this movie on a whim, thanks to the Amazon recommendations !.
The special effects are great, the view of the 'future' is fantastic... but sadly when the movie ends... you say to yourself errmmm, what now ?.... it just does not explain enough HOW and WHY... and that leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth. I want to recommend this movie, I want to share it with my friends and tell them how great it is..... but the ending stops me.

If you want a movie that entertains, this is a great one..... if you want a movie which explains WHY you watched it, avoid this one.
