Product Description

In this savagely poignant drama, replete with brute emotion and raw lust, a young man voyages through the dark heart of Parisian nightlife and the extremes of self-destruction. Angel-eyed Antonin - an aspiring musician - has been wallowing in unrequited love for his sexy, enigmatic band mate Alex. But when the object of his desire suddenly dies in his arms one drug addled night, he recklessly indulges the depths of his pain by descending into a seedy, nocturnal world of public gay sex and hardcore rounds as a rent boy. Antonin continues spiraling downward until he meets Juliette - a vivacious beauty with a secret.

Starring: Christine Boisson, Hubert Benhamdine, Caroline Ducey, Hicham Nazzal

'I Dreamt Under the Water' (French, with English subtitles) is a sombre portrayal of human misery in a contemporary inner city environment. Antonin (apparently a university drop-out, though the actor is mid-30s), lives with his mother, who is still reeling from an unpleasant divorce, in a situation of some poverty. He plays guitar in a band, and has an unrequited crush on the band leader, and his best friend, Alex. When Alex dies of a heroin overdose, Antonin is stricken over his loss, and spirals into an underbelly of Parisian life of drugs and anonymous sex. He meets a woman, Juliette, and has a second-chance to save the life of someone he loves.

The dark lighting, underground clubs and grimy alleyways all serve to complement the film's bleak ambiance, which offers little hope for redemption. The sex scenes are passionless, explicit, and unsimulated. The most memorable feature is the performance given by Hubert Benhamdine (Antonin), who beautifully depicts the mental torment suffered by Antonin after Alex's death.

The film suffers somewhat after the first half, becoming quite slow-moving following the entry of Juliette. More seriously, 'I Dreamt Under the Water' offers little thematically that is new or original. If you can find a copy, 'Fogi is a Bastard' deals exquisitely with similar issues in a much more intense manner.

Overall, 'I Dreamt Under the Water' is worth a watch - if only for Hubert Benhamdine's performance and the superb music soundtrack - though it is doubtful whether it would rate a second-viewing.

Whilst the theme is not new, "I Dreamt Under the Water" remains both visually and emotionally powerful. Throughout the film Antonin (Hubert Benhamdine) appears to exist on the peripheral of reality as he aimlessly searches for both personal fulfilment and identity. His world is dark, demeaning and cruel as he is forced to watch his mother's depression manifest before him, whilst incapable of providing her any support or strength. His own impotence is made apparent through his unrequited love (potentially obsession), with his best friend Alex. The perverse irony is that both are as broken as each other, and could have found some peace had they allowed themselves to be real. Instead Antonin fades into the shadows happy to be a mere presence in the life of Alex, whilst Alex descends into a world of drugs as his rebellion and destruction. When he dies, Antonin is jarred into reality albeit through a jarring and ever present remorse.

It is here where the film really begins, as Antonin falls from what little grace he may have enjoyed. He immerses himself into a world where sexual ambivalence and the carnal are celebrated in a manner which both explicit and impersonal. One scene in particular takes the audience to a place we know to exist, but would rather not accept or believe. Devastated by his loss he tries to find some sense of self or connection, or dare I say intimacy, in that he allows himself to be used by a group of men in a crude and anonymous sexual encounter. None of these men are concerned with the reason for his being there, nor are they concerned with him. He is merely an object (a means to an end) passed from one to another, as if the very fabric of society has fallen and respect, dignity and compassion no-longer exist.

A raw yet beautiful film. Antonin mourns the death of his friend, for he never told him that he loved him .He is searching for connection through cruising and prostitution and then he meets Juliette . I loved this film . The sex is explicit and honest , no cheap titilation but real sex . Maybe my only complaint is the slowness of the second half and the rather disappointing ending . Still one of the best films of this type .

I felt let down by this film. I was expecting more emotion from the characters. Even when they seemed to be enjoying themselves (as was intended) they still seemed miserable. This continued in as the tone for the whole film! Suffice, a mono-emotive film fails to be provocative enough for me.

If you were wondering, the happy ending also inspired depression, despite actually being quite a "happy ending"!
