the highs and the lows , 13 Oct 2008
Another nice tagged classic release,two events from 1999,either side of wrestlemania 15,attitude pouring like wine,worth buying,read on!
Valentines day massacre occured on valentines day and was hyped up big time,the opening match could have caused people to ask for a refund though,goldust fought bluedust,this match was poor,looked poor,both men huffed and puffed and couldnt have set a fire between them if they had gasoline and a box of matches,it was short,dull,lame and,well you get the idea.
The hardcore championship was vacant as bob holly fought al snow next,this match was fun,yet manic,as many of the hardcore matches back in the day were,the match left the building and headed towards a nice river,good stuff.
The big bossman fought mideon next,this match was awful,the crowd chanted boring,i joined them,dull as dishwater.
The WWF tag team championships were contested next as the champs jeff jarrett and owen hart,a good team in my eyes,defended the belts against mark henry and d-lo brown.Both teams were heels in truth and the crowd didnt care for either so this affected the performance but it was an ok match.
The intercontiental title was contested next as val venis fought ken shamrock in one of the worst matches of all time and one of the most damaging matches in terms of keeping alive the notion that wrestling isnt fixed.At one point ken got into a fight with his sister and said very loudly now slap me,it shamed me,shamed that spoon shamrock and shamed the company,how he wasnt fired is beyond me.
kane and the undertaker fought x pac and triple h next in a tag team match that looked tasty enough on paper,i always felt x pac would be the weak link and he was,the match had a somewhat scattered feel to it and some of the moves were poorly executed.
A last man standing match for the wwf championshiop was up next as the rock fought mankind,after their classic match at the royal rumble it was fair to say that this match wouldnt be as good,and it wasnt,but on the night it was a good match,it wasnt perfect but it got the crowd frantic after being treated to some poor matches.
The main event was up next ,a match we all wanted,vince versus stonecold in a steel cage.The very short review of this match is that i loved it,i will leave it there.
Backlash 99 makes up the second disc here and featured in april 99.This event was better than valentines day massacre.Thankfully.
The event opened with a six man tag featuring the brood,gangrel,edge,christian going up against the ministry of darkness,bradshaw,faarooq and mideon.This match was fairly good but mideons performance was awful,and he had plenty of ring time.This was a mixed opener at best.
The hardcore championship was contested next as al snow went up against hardcore holly who was the champ,these two men battled like machines here but something wasnt quite right,this was just ok.
The godfather fought goldust next in a pretty poor match,sluggish at best and awkward,these two put in a match that emphasised that these two could have awful nights.
The new age outlaws fought jeff jarrett and owen hart next in a good enough match,it wasnt pretty or spectacular but it served its purpose.
A boiler room match featured next,mankind fought the big show in a brutal,quite nasty match that was something different,quality.
Triple h fought x pac in an overly long match that wasnt that intense,had it of been then triple h would have knocked x-pacs head of in a few minutes,the pace of this match was poor and it got boring too quick,it should have been better but the two wrestlers are certainly not in the same league.
The undertaker fought ken shamrock in a very good match,one of shamrocks best,he gave his all and the taker worked well with him and the two shared chemistry that i didnt believe they could generate.
The main event for the WWF championship was up next,the rock versus stonecold,a match we saw many a time back in the day but always a match to look forward too and here again we had a very high energy bout with some quality hits and a terrific showcase from the top two at the time,a great main event.
The two pay per views here are far from perfect but contain some good things,2.5 stars out of 5.
