Product Description

Collection of six films directed by the B-movie maestro, Roger Corman. In 'Five Guns West' (1955), John Lund, Dorothy Malone and Touch Connors star in R. Wright Campbell's rugged tale of five outlaws whose next stop is the gallows - unless they take on a dangerous mission. Agreeing to hijack a stagecoach carrying a traitor and $30,000 in gold, the gang brave hostile Comanches and a rivalry brought on by the presence of a beautiful woman (Malone). But when their uneasy alliance dissolves, the only thing any of the men can trust is his own six-shooter. In 'Gunslinger' (1956), after her husband is shot, Rose Hood (Beverly Garland) takes his place as the Sheriff of a small Western town. In 'The Haunted Palace' (1963), a man arrives in a New England town to lay claim to a castle he's inherited. He finds the town populated by mutants and the castle possessed by an ancestor's evil spell. In 'Premature Burial' (1962), the fear of being buried alive has had a hold over Guy Carrell (Ray Milland) all of his life. To try and overcome his fear he decides to open his father's tomb, only to be shocked into a catatonic state and have his worst fear realised. In 'Masque of the Red Death' (1964), while the plague rages throughout Europe, sadistic Italian prince Prospero (Vincent Price) dallies with devil worship. To entertain his fellow Satanists, Prospero hosts a lavish ball in the confines of his castle, but the wanton revelries sour when an uninvited guest arrives - Death himself. Finally, in 'Wild Angels' (1966), Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern play two Hell's Angels whose wild lifestyles eventually catch up with them.

"The Haunted Palace", "Gunslinger", "Premature Burial", "Five Guns West", "Wild Angels" aren't available in Region 2 UK, so this collection is worth getting even if you already have "Masque of the Red Death" in MGM's Roger Corman Collection like I do.

"The Haunted Palace" is my favourite film as it is based on a H. P. Lovecraft story and features Vincent Price and Lon Chaney. Corman is better known for his "creature feature" films, but "The Haunted Palace" and "Masque of the Red Death" demonstrate just how good a director he is.

"Gunslinger" and "Five Guns West" are two of Corman's Westerns, but neither are particularly memorable, with "Five Guns West" being the better of the two. "Premature Burial" is an old-fashioned horror that features Ray Milland, star of "The Lost Weekend" and "Dial M for Murder". "The Wild Angels" is an interesting test-run about bikers for Peter Fonda, who would later appear in "Easy Rider".

I bought this mainly to get 'The Haunted Palace' as I love Vincent Price films and this one is particulary hard to get on its own in a region 2 DVD format. Its not one of his best know films for Roger Corman but I loved it.

Then you get 'Masque of the Red Death' arguably the best film Price ever made with Roger Corman and this package is worth getting for these 2 films alone.
But theres more although, none of the other film titles feature Vincent Price in them:
The Premature Burial, stars Ray Milland & Hazel Court in the 3rd and last of the Edgar Allen Poe based films featured in this package. A nice little macbre tale albeit with a bit of an obvious twist at the end.

Next up we have a truely classic Biker movie 'The Wild Angels' with the famous Peter Fonda line "They wanna be free to do what they wanna go, To ride their machines without being hassled by the man, and they want to get loaded and have a good time" fabulous along with 'Easy Rider' one of the best films made about the whole Hells Angels scene.

Lastly we get 2 Western's with '5 Guns West' & 'Gunslinger' and IMO why oh why did they bother they really didn't do anything for me, but thats probably due mainly to my personal bias of it not being a classic Western's film without John Wayne or Montgomery Cliff appearing in it, Nevermind.

All in all though a nice little package well worth getting for the other 4 films featured at least.
