Product Description

Review

Lloyd-Jones [provides] a clear-headed, muscular account.... and the RLPO respond with unstinting spirit. --Gramophone

Review

The [RLPO's] orchestral playing, too, is wholly admirable, full of vitality and, where required, infectious rhythmic snap... Mike Clements's sound is, on the whole, very fine... in terms of muscular drive and satisfying logic Lloyd-Jones must now take the prize. --Gramophone

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine music from a lesser known 20th century English composer, 3 Sep 2009
William Alwyn (1905-1985) had a long career that included spells as a composer, flautist, teacher, painter and writer. He was a prolific composer, especially of film music, and held the prestigious post of Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, but despite this he remains much less well known than other 20th century English composers such as Holst, Vaughan-Williams and Britten. This is a great shame because his output includes some highly individual and beautifully crafted music that is a joy to listen to. This CD includes two of my favourite Alwyn compositions, the hauntingly lyrical 'Autumn Legend' written for cor anglais and strings and the more academic and precise 'Concerto Grosso No 1' for eight soloist and strings. The playing throughout from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under the baton of David Lloyd-Jones is first class, showing a real feel for the music, and the sound quality of the Naxos recording is very good. I was tempted to give a 5 star rating, but on reflection I think that the performances do fall a little short of earlier recordings of Alwyn's music made by Richard Hickox on the Chandos label and by the composer himself on the Lyrita label - but this recording is worth 4.5 stars perhaps and is certainly well worth listening to.
