I purchased one of these for my father, who is pretty much IT iliterate when it comes to hardware devices, to replace a BT modem that was causing drop outs on his ADSL connection. I plucked for a Zyxel model as I have been using their kit for a while and they tend to be quite robust. I arranged for it to be delivered at his house during the week and then the plan was that I would turn up at the weekend and configure it. Fortunately it was so easy to configure that he phoned me up on saturday morning to say that he had configured it on the friday and it was working perfectly.

I still went over and looked at the config and to be honest you can't really go wrong with it. Follow the quick start guide - which just get you to provide the login details for you ISP and the device will auto detect the rest of the settings. There is no real need for the casual user to even look at the advanced settings on this device, as the basic settings control the initial ADSL connection - the advanced settings cover DNS/DHCP etc. There is no wireless and there is only a single ethernet port, so whilst it is a router is you need to use multiple machines with this you would need a cheap hub/switch to allow access.

It's not massively featured, but if you just want to do a bit of casual browsing and don't need a corporate level firewall then this will do the job. It's not particularly attractive, I think the design of the case can best be described as functional, but it works.

It's been up and running for over a week and I haven't had any phone calls about dropouts!
