DVD Description

The scenario of the slasher movie may be familiar-a group of teenage counsellors at a lakeside summer camp face the vengeance of a twisted psycho-but the nail-biting tension and graphically gory scenes will certainly not be. Described as a "searing, pulse-pounding bolt of energy sure to shock even the most hardened gore addict", The Burning is the directorial debut of Tony Maylem with special effects by genius of gore Tom Savini.

Synopsis

FRIDAY THE 13th spawned an entire generation of imitators, but few were quite as accomplished as Tony Maylam's THE BURNING. Featuring effects by Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD), the film begins as a group of rambunctious kids plays a prank on the janitor at their summer camp that goes horribly wrong and results in him suffering severe burns. After five years in the hospital, he gets out and heads back to the camp for revenge, where one of his tormentors is now a counselor. The film sticks to all the conventions of 1980s movies (e.g. making each kid either a jock, nerd, prankster, etc.) and boasts outstanding gore effects. THE BURNING (which includes early screen appearances by Holly Hunter, Jason Alexander, and Fisher Stevens) is a campy, well done slasher film with a few genuinely disturbing moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original Summer Camp Slayer, 23 Oct 2009
By Lark (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This movie I think gets a mention in the commentary on the Simpsons Tree House of Horror in which grounds keeper Willy becomes a Freddy Kreuger style killer and I think also in the humour section How To Survive A Horror Movie. The character of Cropsy, the hell bent for revenge killer, is a lot like the "Scissorman" featured in the Clocktower games for the playstation too.

This is one of the original summer camp slayer movies and there are lot of people who act in the movie who will be familiar to viewers from elsewhere, having gone on to other movies or appearing in TV series.

Thematically this movie is like a lot of the clones that have appeared since, kids at a summer camp like to tell tales of a sinister quasi-supernatural, disfigured personage from the camp's past who will one day return to exact horrible vengence upon camp counsellors and campers for past wrongs suffered at their hands. The serious shame is that were you to describe that theme and ask anyone what film you are talking about you are most likely to hear them say you are talking about the Friday The Thirteenth movies, which are very, very poor by comparison.

This movie is vastly superior, not simply for it being original, but also for its working on a number of levels. It didnt feel like a straight forward stalker horror where bodycount fills in for a plot or storyline. Instead its not just a tale about Cropsy, hell bent for revenge killer, but a more interesting story about the incident which serves as the genesis for this character, those involved and how it effected their lives later. It'll no doubt sound strange but it works as a summer camp movie too.

This is highly recommended as a superior horror movie, far superior to its imitators. I'd hope that simply by watching it viewers could come away with a changed point of view about how awful a lot of the hack and slash movies are by comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars A legend of terror isn't a campfire story anymore!, 17 Oct 2009
The burning is probably one of the best slasher films to be released in the early 80's and one of the best slasher films I've ever seen. This is one of those rare and forgoten horror films that should not be ignored, so it might have all your typical horror cliches and it might look like it was cashing in on the succes of Friday the 13th only thing is I think that its better than any of the friday the 13th films and it was great fun. A group of teenagers dicide to play a prank on the old caretaker but when the prank goes horibly wrong, the caretaker is burned and badly disfigured. A couple of years later when hes released from hospital he decides to have his revenge on the kids from the same camp and he'll kill anyone in his way. Cropsy the killer in this film was quite menacing and his weapon of choice is a garden shear so you can only imagine the damage he's going to inflict on his victims. The story is simple enough but you'll probably want to watch this for the graphic gore and blood and this film does not dissapoint, the special fx were done by special fx wizard Tom Savini which has to be some of his best work yet, some scenes include a teenager being stabed in the neck, lifted in the air and then impaled on a tree and the infamous canoe scene where a bunch of teens get their limbs and fingers hacked of and thats the reason why this film almost got an x rating and was banned in several countries. The film also has two famous actors including Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter before they were stars and I'm sure they probably wouldn't mention this film on thier resumes oh well, the film was slightly sleazy what with the execsive nudity blood and gore but thats what makes this film excellent to watch.
