Amazon.co.uk Review

Breaking up is hard to do--but that doesn't mean you can't have some belly laughs about it. Forgetting Sarah Marshall provides that rare treat: a romantic comedy about breakups, that is both romantic and funny. The laughs, especially from writer-star Jason Segel, are both heartfelt and raunchy, and the film is just unexpected enough that it keeps the viewer's attention till the end. The touches of producer Judd Apatow, who's famously retooled rom-coms to appeal to guys as much as women, are woven throughout the film, but Segel's script, reportedly based on many of his own experiences, is fresh and original. And adult. Forgetting Sarah Marshall features male genitalia laffs presented in unexpected and human ways (the nude breakup scene is played for giggles but also deep poignancy), and the language and sex scenes are strictly for grownups--and rightly so. Segel's script, and his performance as Peter, show that he understands the true nature of adult relationships, which provides the refreshing difference between this film and some of Apatow's other crude creations. The cast is sublime; Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) plays title character Sarah, a self-absorbed actress, and Russell Brand is her new British honey who accompanies her to--what are the chances?--the exact same Hawaiian resort as Peter, who's nursing his broken heart. Mila Kunis plays Rachel, the resort employee who gives Peter a reason to hope, and Paul Rudd is the surfing instructor who gives him his own brand of heartfelt advice ("When life gives you lemons, just say 'F--- the lemons' and bail," he says cheerily). The pacing is screwball, and the absurdities fly (a "Dracula" musical puppet show, and a surprisingly lovely Hawaiian version of "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Nothing the viewer will forget any time soon.--A.T. Hurley

Synopsis

Knocked Up's Judd Apatow and Jason Segel reteam for this hilarious comedy about heartbreak. Segel also stars as Peter Bretter, a guy desperately trying to get over his ex (Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars) when he runs into her on vacation with her new boyfriend. Mila Kunis (That 70s Show) co-stars as the girl that just might help Peter move on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little gem, 26 Aug 2008

Despite being overshadowed here in the UK by Russell Brand being in it, upon watching this its obvious that this film belongs to Jason Segel, writer and star. Sure, Brand is hilarious, but no more so than Jonah Hill or Bill Hader and nowhere near approaching the rising star of Segel. For fans of the recent spate of romantic comedies for men, this will not disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Watch!, 16 Oct 2008
By willow (The Universe) - See all my reviews
Forgetting Srah Marshall is a really funny account of one man's attempt to get over a break up with a conceited t.v actress.
As far as comedy's are concerned I'm generally not a fan, I mean movies intended to be funny generally aren't, but Forgetting Sarah Marshall manages to get a few laughs from its viewer (me at least). What's silly about the film is the lead character Peter's striking ability (at the start of the film) to pretty much have casual sex with anyone he wants, I'm not a very shallow person, but he's not that good looking & he kind of wallows in his own pretentiousness. The movie does raise a good few laughs & original gags, but if sex jokes aren't your thing then your probably better giving this a miss.
Russell Brand gives me yet another reason to like him (it was only last month that he went way up in my ranks for dissing the Jonas Brothers). His performance is good & he plays a sex-addicted rock star to the T (maybe because the character is pretty much what Brand used to be, only with a record deal.)
If you choose to watch this film (& I sincerely recommend you do) don't expect big laughs, or a great movie, it has many flaws, but hopefully you'll be able to see past that & just enjoy it for what it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Above-average rom-com with a strong cast, 9 Jan 2010
By Mr. Stuart Bruce "DonQuibeats" (Cardiff, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" sounds, at first glance, like a standard rom-com, one of a whole rash of modern bawdy 'date flicks' of recent years. To some extent that's true, but it's definitely an above-average effort. The basic plot- running off to Hawaii to forget your ex-girlfriend only to find she's already there with her new bloke- is not too exciting, but it's the individual characters and performances that make it really watchable.

What isn't mentioned much is that there's a improv element to the film- many of the actors (though not, apparently, the female leads) were allowed to ad lib around their lines, giving a real spontaneous and unusual feel to some of the dialogue- particularly, as you'd expect, from the unique insanity of Russell Brand, whose casting, or rather type-casting, is perfect. You can see some of the alternative takes as extras on the DVD, along with about 15 minutes of deleted scenes, many of which are funny enough that I can't believe they got cut.

It is full of sex jokes and a bit of, let's call it titillation, so if you're looking for art house cinema you are of course in the wrong place. But if a fun romantic comedy with some great jokes in it is your thing, this is a bargain.
