Product Description

Product Description

Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone) is a mountain rescue worker haunted by the memories of a friend whom he failed to rescue, and who perished on the ice peaks. Having quit his job and fled the mountains, Gabe must return to the scene of his undoing to track down nefarious villain Qualen (John Lithgow), who is searching the snow for stolen money. Things get more complicated with the arrival of Gabe's ex-girlfriend Jessie (Janine Turner).

From Amazon.co.uk

Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, this time thanks to director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) and some spectacularly rugged and vertigo-inducing, high-mountain terrain. The opening sequence alone delivers what the title promises, and there's an extraordinary airplane stunt that was later reprised, with modifications, in Air Force One. Stallone, looking as tough and craggy as the mountains themselves, is a rescue climber who finds himself going after a gang of crooks (headed by John Lithgow in his bad-guy mode) who've hijacked a US Treasury plane and crash landed in the Rockies with millions of bucks. Outrageous action-packed, snow-packed and scenery-packed chase sequences (featuring whirring helicopters, whooshing skis, popping gunfire and clanging pitons that earned the movie Oscar nominations for sound and sound editing) abound. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This has to be one of the best action films i've ever seen (with the exception of PREDATOR and HARD TARGET).
The plot follows two mountain climbers who are called out only to find its a hoax, and waiting for them are a group of armed terrorists who have just stolen $1,000,000. The two mountain climbers are then ordered to help them find the cases which are scattered in random locations.
Lots of explosive action and great fight scenes with some great scenery make this fil a winner.
The reason this film only gets 3 stars is because it was cut by the BBFC, heavily removing violence and violent scenes. The UK version lost over 2 mins.

Whether you like or dislike Sylvester Stallone, there is no doubt that 'Cliffhanger', which was a come - back for Stallone after several recent movies that were not recieved well by both the public or the critics, is a superb action movie with a great performance from all the cast especially Stallone, whos acting ability i feel is sometimes overlooked and underated.
Sylvester Stallone plays Gabe Walker Mountain Rescue climber in the Rockies who quits his job and leaves town after a freak climbing accident which resulted in the death of his best friends girlfriend, him believing that it was in fact his fault. However, six months after the accident, Gabe returns to pick up the last few things he has, and to persuade his old lover to leave with him.
Meanwhile high up above the mountains a plane carring a hundred million dollars has been highjacked by a group of master mind criminals, and due to a loophole in their plan, have been forced to crash land the plane in the Rockies. With a big storm fast approaching, helicopters are out of the question to retreive them, and so Gabe is called upon to climb up and bring the back down safely.
However, the money that the criminals are after has been scattered in three black cases all over the place, and with the help of a tracking device, they force Gabe to take them to each location, little do they know that Gabe has his own plans and his familiarity of the mountains allow him to turn the tables.
The performances from all the cast are generally good, especially from Stallone whose acting ability if very often overlooked, and is in fact very good in this film. John Lithgow in his bad-guy mode plays Eric Qualen, the leader of the 'baddies'.

..but also not a reference title. I had high expectations in "Cliffhanger". Being one of my fave movies, especially a great work from acclaimed director Renny Harlin, this blu ray release does not hold up with my hopes, but does not dissapoint either. The good news: the newly remastered picture and the overall transfer look definetly better than the DVD version. The bad news: It does not really give a thrill while watching the picture quality. Tough some scenes look pretty clear and sharp, and even occasionally touch the quality blu ray stands for, the all-in-all picture throughout the movie appears to be a bit un-sharp, somewhat with a loss of crispy clear pictures. There is no 3D-Feeling that some reference titles may give you.

Its hard to really judge on the pic, but it is not what i expected for a movie with glorious nature shots and breathless action. The compression of the 2,35:1 aspect ratio works very well, filmgrain is visible but does not disturb. Colours are saturated, but do not peak out. Close ups sometimes look awesome, sometimes blurry. The quality is changing a lot within the movie and left me behind with mixed feelings. All in all,
i'd give

65% out of 100% for the picture quality.

The audio does not come up any better. The music score is fine and supports the action, but dialogues sound often faded, while the whole work was done by my two front speakers and a bit by the bass speaker. At some point you can hear a bit wind and snow around the rest of the audio setup, but thats all. Shame is, there are NO subtitles available!

Thats 55% all in all.

Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone) is an expert climber, but after a tragic incident leaves a girl dead, he leaves the mountains to get his head together. After his self imposed break he returns in the hope of rekindling a relationship with Jessie (Janine Turner). Whilst at the rescue centre he is called to help a group who are stranded in the mountains, he agrees to help out this one last time, unaware that the group in the mountains are heavily armed, murderous thieves, and they need help of another kind.

Directed by Renny Harlin, this is one of those films that shows that Stallone once had box office clout as big as his bodily frame. It's a delightful no brain action film that delivers royally to those with a bent for the action genre. What really lifts Clifhanger above average is the wonderful use of suspenseful situations. The film opens with a quite breathtaking sequence and then kicks on to literally have us hanging on by our fingernails. The bad guys are deliciously over the top, none more so than the bullishly nasty John Lithgow as Eric Qualen, whilst Sly gets beefcake support from the ever reliable Michael Rooker. Cinematography by Alex Thomson is gorgeous as he brings to life the Cortina d'Ampezzo area of the Dolomites in Italy. Score is by Trevor Jones, who keeps it orchestral as he lifts from his own work for Last of the Mohicans, which in turn is mixed with what sounds like the lead theme of Alan Silvestri's work on Predator.

Slam bang action, tense fraught moments, and a script written with knowing tongue in cheek persuasion, Cliffhanger literally does ROCK. 7.5/10
