Great to see an album like this released in 2008, 30 Jun 2008
I didn't know much about Yeti before except for the fact they supported
Oasis and this is the first CD of theirs I've bought. A friend forwarded
me their "Don't Go Back To The One You Love" video and I was suitably
impressed to check out their other songs (by the way the video is a
must-see). The album has a real 60s Westcoast feel about it that almost
makes the music sound un-English if you ignore the vocals and lyrics.
Reminds me a little of Buffalo Springfield. There's a mix of feel-good
acoustic numbers, gory serial killer songs, beautifully-harmonised ballads
and psychedelic epics, but they do all sound like they belong together and
that a lot of thought had been put into the album. The album does sound
very retro, almost like a cassette tape. It sounds quite different from
everything else out there, but once you get used to it, it's a real
grower. I'm liking the songs more and more after further listening, which
can't be said for most of my recent purchases. If you like your music
light, melodic and a little retro, this album is a must.

Don't expect the Libertines, this is 60s style pop, pyschedelic brilliance with superb songwriting, 24 Jun 2008
Yeti may always be known as that band with the bassist from the Libertines but with this album they deserve to be seen as a great band in their own right. The album sounds like music by bands that I grew up listening to as a kid, bands that I still love. Yeti's strongest point is their songwriting, something that is shared between three members, and you can hear the different influences. The album starts with the most Beatles-sounding track Obviously - most tracks written by Hassall tend to sound quite Beatles - and then moves on to the epic Don't go Back To The One You Love. It took a few listens but it's something of a masterpiece, like Captain Beefheart covering a CSNY song with a bit of Pink Floyd in the middle. Til The Weekend Comes and Merry Go Round have the most beautiful harmonies that will put a smile on your face. In Like With You is a poginant ballad that reminds me of Dolly Parton of all people. All the other tracks are great, I could go on and on. I really like Midnight Flight, the scary lyrics about a serial infant-killer and the way it goes from spooky guitars to a full-blown jam. Never Lose Your Sense of Wonder sounds like a classic already with the three part harmonies in the chorus, reminiscent of the Byrds and Hollies. One of those "feel good" summer songs. Libertines fans will notice Sister Sister, a track Hassall wrote for Legs11. This version is much more laid back, it still has the lofi feel but features a trumpet! There's also a strange, intriguing bonus track about Star Wars. Highly recommended and well worth a shot if you like 60s or early 70s influenced music (certainly at Amazon's price, I paid more at Zavvi before I saw this).

Album review: The Legend of Yeti Gonzales by Yeti. Track by track, 2 Jul 2008
Yeti have been around for about four years now and like Babyshambles existed at the same time as The Libertines. Fronted by former Libertines bass player John Hassel, along with Mark Underwood on Acoustic and vocals, Andrew Déian Cannes on Electric Guitar and vocals and finally Graham Blacow on Drums. They have had a couple of singles out over the last four years but have, partly due to changes in line up and management, have only now got around to putting out a UK album (they have put out two in Japan). So here is my track by track review:
1)Obvious-Lee:
The album opens up to sound effects or radio tuning before the first song begins. The intro of song reminds of early Beatles. This is such a great track that sounds like it comes straight out of the sixties. There is a hint of California sun and has great harmonies. Great production values. 8/10
2)Don't Go Back To The One You Love:
There is a lot going on with on this track. It has a great tune with clever lyrics I really like the beat of this track. Combined with some whistling that sounds as though it comes straight out of A Fist Full Of Dollars. I like the raw edge to this song. The middle eight is inspired. It needs a couple of listens, but I have to say it's a great song. 7/10
3)Til The Weekend Comes:
Nice intro to this song, it is sung in a very soulful way and again I feel that this sounds also has something of a Beatles sound to it further more I would say it could come off Rubber Soul. I love the brilliant guitars on this song. I also hear a bit of a Libertines influence on this track. I love the drumming too. 8/10
4)Merry Go Round:
This is a great song with a wonderful tune with clever lyrics. This is a joyous piece of work that just gets better and better with every listen again the harmonies are great on this one. A great song for summer also to sit back and relax to. Ends with more radio sound effects. 9/10
5) In Like With You:
Right from the start this is a classic. The tone of the song is sad but listening to it gives you a warm feeling inside and also makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. The song has great emotion and a tune to die for. The lyrics are those of great song writing. 10/10
6) Shane MaCGowan:
Perhaps not the most obvious person to write a song about, however The Pogues front man provides good inspiration for this song. The song seems to be a little tongue in cheek but sounds great with kind of a rockabilly feel to it. A great fun song, I particularly love the lyric 'Put another log on the fire Shawn's gonna get much higher'. 8/10
7)Midnight Flight:
Has a sound that reminds me of the early days of rock & roll I even here a flavour of the much covered 'Sixteen Tones' in both sound and tone. Lots of power and depth to this song with a hint of skiffle. A truly wonderful piece of work with strong riffs that power through the song. 9/10
8) Jermyn Girls:
Has an American kind of sound. A really chilled out melody that can get you humming along. There is a nice beat to this song as well as a well arranged tune, a great pop song. It's another great one to relax to but also a real toe tapper. 8/10
9) Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder:
This is my favourite song by Yeti. It is a really poetic number that lifts up your heart and makes you want to jump up and down for joy. It kind of makes me think back to childhood and examine my life, a sort of allegorical piece. The tune is finely polished and the lyrics are buoyant. 10/10
10) Reprise:
This instrumental track begins with strong drumming before kicking in with some heavy guitars reminiscent of the Beatles' 'Don't let me down'. It ends with the by now familiar tuning of the radio effect. 7/10
11) Can't Pretend:
This is another chilled out track that reminds me this time of 60's Rolling Stones music. There is some nice guitar action on this number providing a great background for more well crafted words. 8/10
12) Sister Sister:
This is yet another one with a kind of Beatles feel to it, this time it reminds me of something from Magical Mystery Tour. A well structured song, with more classic sounds. A song filled with great optimism and happiness I like the trumpets in the middle of the track and the way it tails off. 9/10
13) The Last Time You Go (6 Feet Under):
There is an English 60s sound to this track with a dollop of Buddy Holly thrown in for good measure. As with the other songs on the album the vocals sound great with a real earthy quality to them. 7/10
14) Who is Gonzales (plus more):
Starts with an intro of yet more radio stuff before a minute or so of silence then launching into what I guess is a hidden track. It is another tongue and cheek song to round off this fantastic album. The song is about Star Wars even featuring quotes from the movies, this is a great sounding acoustic track. The best song I ever heard about Star Wars. Sure to bring a smile. 8/10
Summary
This is a great album and I can tell you from experience that these songs play as well live as they do on record. You will notice that the Beatles are mentioned a lot in this review that is no accident. This band shows with this album that they really have a lot to offer. I hope you now go out and buy it!
