Synopsis

Yung Chang's enthralling documentary UP THE YANGTZE explores the cultural conflicts of modern globalised China, or more specifically, to The Yangtze River. The Three Gorges Dam stands to become the largest hydroelectric project in history, and a testament to China's growing economic power. It also threatens to destroy the lush landscape and much-loved homes of the people surrounding it. Chang personalises this conflict by focusing on the strange 'farewell cruise' which carries Western tourists up the river to take in the disappearing panorama. As the sightseers enjoy the luxury of the cruise, they are waited on and entertained by a young Chinese crew struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes to their country. UP THE YANGTZE is a beautifully shot, shocking and often moving account of diversity and conformity in a rapidly developing world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable documentary, a must-see., 19 Nov 2009

"I know it's because your father and I don't have the skills, that we have to exploit you. If we had a choice how could we do this to you?"

Up The Yangtze is a riveting, multi-award-winning documentary about the building of the Three Gorges Dam and the flooding that it required. It displaced over a million people, but the documentary focuses on the lives of two children, a young girl from a poor family who force her to leave education and get a job, and a boy from a more well-off family; both of whom are trying to get a job on a cruise ship for mostly western tourists offering a `farewell tour' to the valley which was slowly being flooded.

The film offers an insight to China's increasing reliance on consumer capitalism and tourism: a reliance which takes away as many opportunities as it presents. Coupled with beautiful panoramic shots, and an ending sequence which is both moving and reflective, this is a documentary that should not be missed. Granted it is a little slow, but it is never anything less than fascinating.

This film will make your heart bleed... How tragic the way humans treat each other in the name of 'progress'... a total capitalistic vision of a future hell on earth

2.0 out of 5 stars A misnomer, 21 July 2009

This DVD was not what I expected - not at all.

I had expected a documentary that followed the Yangtze. It is not.

So what is it? It is a docmentary about people who's lives are being changed by the Three Gorges Dam and how they cope with the changes and how they live. Interesting as this is the documentary moves at a snails pace and never captured me completely. Possibly since I have ties to China and it provided little new and to be honest because I did expect something else entirely.

I won't be watching it again anytime soon (if ever) so as a keeper it doesn't rank very high but if it is a documentary on Wild life or nature you are looking for go for the Excellent Wild China instead :)
