Product Description

CD Description

Apart from Fire Dance, every track on this CD is a ravaging pamphlet against the corruption, ignorance, malady, sadness, pollution and the many others ill that ravage contemporary Africa. Seun has adopted his father s second Yoruba name, Anikulapo ( I ve got death in my quiver ). Seun s songs are arrows that never miss their targets; the corrupt, bribers, the oppressors. For Seun, taking up where his father left off is about building on Fela s legacy, not trying to escape it: He was a very great man. But of course every artist wants to define himself .

From the opening bars of the self-titled debut from Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - ideas, words, and notes whiz about with abandon. The Afrobeat magic is set in motion while the delirious, unrelenting groove machine carries us away without missing a moment. For this debut album and full North American summer tour, Seun is leading the legendary Egypt 80 orchestra, his father s last band. Egypt 80 have been together for over 2 decades and it shows in every note.

About the Artist

Seun Kuti is the son of Fela Kuti, one of Africa s greatest musician and inventor of Afrobeat. With the same energetic and booming voice as Fela, Seun has also developed his own raging rhythm, while citing Chuck D, Dr. Dre and Eminem among his other musical heroes. Seun started learning to play saxophone & piano when he was 8, and first appeared on stage at 9 as opening act with his father s band, Egypt 80. He delivers an incendiary debut album, on the eve of a 20-date North American tour that will leave no doubt that Seun is also the heir of Fela Kuti s hardline militancy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blazing his own trail, 10 Jul 2008
By David Johnson "El Burrito" (Buenos Aires) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Afrobeat is back in all it's hip-shaking vitriolic splendour with this raucous release from Seun Kuti.
It might be Fela's old band but Seun cuts his own swathe with that deep bombastic voice and sax solos that really hit the lines.
The tracks are so painfully groovy, the riffs of the brilliant opener "Many Things," and "Fire Dance" standing out for their intoxicating relentlessness.
The lyrics are as passionate as fearless as Fella's with attacks on the Nigerian establishment and poverty.
This is shamelessly passionate music that you'll hold, cherish and listen to forever.
