Amazon.co.uk Review
Now here’s an intriguing premise for a horror-thriller. What if you were entirely aware of what was happening mid-operation, when you were supposed to be under anaesthetic? That’s just what happens to Hayden Christensen in Awake, a tidy, intriguing little film that makes a few interesting choices as its storyline evolves.

Christensen plays Clay Beresford, born into a rich family and dating a woman that he hides from his mother. He also is in need of heart surgery, and as he heads in for his operation, he gradually seems to be tying his life together. But there’s more to Awake than that, and writer-director Joby Harold’s screenplay throws in a couple of fairly obvious rug-pulls, although it’s still decent fun spotting them nonetheless.

What’s surprising about Awake is that it’s less interested in its central concept than perhaps it should be. It also hinges a too-challenging role on the shoulders of Jessica Alba, although supporting players such as Terence Howard, Lena Olin and Fisher Stevens do carry some of the weight.

With a concise and to-the-point sub-90 minute running time, Awake knows not to outstay its welcome, and generally delivers an entertaining, if ultimately shallow night in front of the box. There was, however, potential here for a more interesting movie than the one we got. --Jon Foster

Synopsis
Writer/director Joby Harold's debut feature, AWAKE, is an unsettling thriller that highlights a deeply troubling medical problem. 'nesthetic awareness' is a rare but dangerously prevalent condition that affects nearly 30,000 individuals a year, in which patients who have been put under anesthesia before surgery remain paralyzed while still being aware of their present situation. AWAKE tells the story of Clayton Beresford Jr. (Hayden Christensen), a successful young businessman who lives under the roof of his overbearing mother, Lilith (Lena Olin). Afraid to expose his engagement to Lilith's beautiful assistant, Sam Lockwood (Jessica Alba), Clayton decides to do so when he realizes that, thanks to a rare heart condition, he might not live much longer. His best friend and personal surgeon, Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), supports his decision to take the plunge, and also advises him to get a much-needed heart transplant as soon as a donor is found. After he marries Sam, a donor arrives, but when Clayton is put under to receive the complicated surgery, he is shocked to discover that he's still cognizant of everything that is happening to him. As he fights through the pain to hear the doctors' voices, the more he learns about his best friend and his new wife, adding further trauma to an already horrendous situation.
Featuring standout performances from the film's principal cast (Christensen, Alba, Howard), as well as its supporting players (Olin, Fisher Stevens, Christopher McDonald), AWAKE is a tense journey through the mind of an innocent man who's on the verge of losing his lease on life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully shot, but badly executed hospital-set thriller, 11 Oct 2008
By D. Jackson "DJ" (UK) - See all my reviews

By now, everyone probably knows what the set-up is, but for those who don't: 1) A wealthy man is undergoing a heart transplant... 2) When his operation begins, he realizes that he hasn't been anesthetized correctly... 3) He then hears doctors considering whether to just let him die... 4) Amazingly complicated plot-line ensues...

Even though there could have been better ways in which Awake's premise could have been accomplished, director Joby Harold makes the film so visually sumptuous that it doesn't really matter. Hayden Christensen is quite good in a classic man-in-peril role, and equally good is Jessica Alba playing Hayden's two-faced girlfriend.

Admittedly, there were moments in this film which made me take a step back and consider whether or not I'd accidentally picked up a feature-length version of Casualty, but a good story, a fast pace, a tiny running time and lots of cringe-worthy scenes make Awake a considerable amount less grueling than some reviewers would have you believe.

Give it a go!

4.0 out of 5 stars Whats not to like?, 11 Aug 2008
By Bazzer "Adam" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Well obviously this movie has the whole Marmite thing going on, you either love it or you hate it. It appears so far that most people on amazon really don't like it. Well I have to say I loved it. I was gripped from start to finish, I personally didn't find it slow at all and all the cast put on a great performance.
The twist was actually a pretty big shock to me, I didn't see it coming at all. And as the movie only runs for 75 minutes it's kept short and sweet. So how anyone can say it's slow surprises me, but we all have our likes and dislikes.
So if you're in the mood for a classy thriller then I would definately check this one out. After renting it the other night I will most definately be adding it to my DVD collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars Writers, choose a story!, 30 May 2009
By Mr. Simon A. Macklin (Northampton, England) - See all my reviews

The premise - a wealthy man is incorrectly anaesthetized during a heart transplant op. and is awake throughout - seems like the major story until about an hour. It`s a fine idea, and worthy of a film. Oddly though, this part of the film becomes irrelevant as it progresses.

So what happened, guys? Did panic set in that the story wasn`t strong enough? No idea how to end this idea? Did the producers demand more of a role for Jessica Alba?

Another viewpoint is that the story which takes over the last half hour, which I won`t reveal to avoid spoiling it for others, this idea in itself would be strong enough. It switches the viewers sympathy quite dramatically from the wife of the patient to the mother, and is perfectly adequate.

What is not acceptable to me is to have one story, change it to another, and try to blend them hurriedly at the end. Both were fine in their own right. A classic case of more being less!
