Product Description

Sequel to the 1999 swashbuckling Eqyptology adventure. Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evie (Rachel Weisz), the stars of the orginal film, have now settled down to married life in London with their 8-year-old son Alex. Meanwhile, the British museum is playing host to the corpse of Imhotep, the mummy which had previously given Rick and Evie such a hard time. When ancient magic brings Imhotep back to life, a chain of events is set in motion that will lead to the end of the world, thus forcing Rick and Evie to dust-off their mummy-defeating skills once again.

From Amazon.co.uk

Proving that bigger is rarely better, The Mummy Returns serves up so much action and so many computer-generated effects that it quickly grows exhausting. In his zeal to establish a lucrative franchise, writer-director Stephen Sommers dispenses with such trivial matters as character development and plot logic, and charges headlong into an almost random buffet of minimum story and maximum mayhem, beginning with a prologue establishing the ominous fate of the Scorpion King (played by World Wrestling Federation star the Rock, in a cameo teaser for his later starring role in--you guessed it--The Scorpion King). Dormant for 5,000 years, under control of the Egyptian god Anubis, the Scorpion King will rise again in 1933, which is where we find The Mummy's returning heroes Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, now married and scouring Egyptian ruins with their 8-year-old son, Alex Freddie Boath).

John Hannah (as Weisz's brother) and Oded Fehr (as mystical warrior Ardeth Bay) also return from The Mummy, and trouble begins when Alex dons the Scorpion King's ancient bracelet, coveted by the evil mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), who's been revived by... oh, but does any of this matter? With a plot so disposable that it's impossible to care about anything that happens, The Mummy Returns is best enjoyed as an intermittently amusing and physically impressive monument of Hollywood machinery, with gorgeous sets that scream for a better showcase, and digital trickery that tops its predecessor in ambition, if not in payoff. By the time our heroes encounter a hoard of ravenous pygmy mummies, you'll probably enjoy this movie in spite of itself. --Jeff Shannon

After the financial success of The Mummy two years earlier, the sequel was inevitable. The big players from the first film are back, Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo and Oded Fehr. Stephen Sommers once again directs (and writes), Patricia Velasquez comes in to be a main player after her cameo in the first film, and young Freddie Boath plays the son of Rick and Evelyn who are now married. This time the cameo goes to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who plays The Scorpion King and who is replaced by a very bad CGI version of himself at film's finale.

When the second sequel, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), was released, Brendan Fraser went on record as saying that for The Mummy Returns they basically remade the film they had already made in 1999! This is absolutely true, some new characters and an expansion on the O'Connell romance have been put in to beef it up, while some Zombie Pygmies are around to add extra monster factor, but yes! It's a retread only with more money spent, more effects (and better effects apart from Scorpion King) and more noise. This is actually OK for those who enjoyed the first film immensely, because "Returns" is every bit as enjoyable as family blockbuster entertainment. The Worldwide box offices rang to the tune of over $330 million in profit. That's a lot of happy families you would think!

So yes, it's a bit of a cheat, but much like the film before it, it gets away with it because the makers do everything they can to entertain the action/adventure loving crowd. With legions of Anubis warriors, those awesome Pygmies and the all round funny by-play between a cast comfortable with the material (again), The Mummmy Returns delivers exactly what can reasonably be expected of it. 7/10

Although there are certain points in this film where you feel like asking the person next to you to pass the sick bag, it is great fun and you can look forward to meeting all the well-loved characters from the first movie, and an appearance from the ROCK which can't be bad. Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz are excellent as are all the other actors and the action and fight scenes are amazing. Another good thing is that although there are various twists along the way you don't have to think too much so you can just sit back and enjoy some good old fashioned guns, swords and goody vs. baddy fights! You'll love it!!! P.S. If anyone else is as interested in films as I am then please e-mail me or contact me on msn messenger!! I look forward to speaking to you soon.

this film, although it was a sequel, i thought that it was much better than the first! my husband and i went to see this film at the cinema, and although we were a little diasappointed with the first film, we both thought that it had been money well spent. it would help, however, if you do have the first one to watch afterwards, because things from the first film are mentioned frequently in this film. although i have only given this film 4 stars and not the five that i think it deserves, it maybe because i am an egypt-fan anyway, and dont want to be too predudiced. anyway, for an evening's escapism, this is the film to watch!!

Rick O'Connell is now married to Evelyn and has settled in London, where they are raising their 8-year-old son Alex.

When a chain of events finds the corpse of Imhotep resurrected in the British Museum, the mummy Imhotep walks the earth once more, determined to fulfil his quest for immortality.

But another force has also been set loose in the world... one born of the darkest rituals of ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep.

When these two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending the O'Connells on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable evil, and rescue their son before it is too late...

Well after the huge success of the remake, a sequel was inevitable, and as expected, it's more of the same stuff. If it ain't broke don't fix it......just copy the set pieces from the first movie and switch the locations.

And that's the film main problem, you have an irritating sense of déjà Vu whilst watching the movie. Fraser is still trying to be Harrison Ford, but alas, the script just leaves Rick a kind of sarcastic Jock who gets a bit sad toward the end.

If anything, the film belongs to Weisz. If you can stomach the incoherent script, and convoluted narrative, her story (even though it's amazing it never came about in the first movie) is interesting, her character actually does something different, whereas everybody else from the first movie is doing the same thing, only not as good.

The we have the inclusion of The Rock. His prologue sets the tone of the film up very well, and you can tell, even in his short role, he is going to be something of a screen presence.

It's 1933, and the O'Connells are at it again. The now married Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evy (Rachel Weisz) are back in Egypt exploring a long sealed tomb. They've even brought their eight year old son Alex (Freddie Boath) along for the ride. They're hear because of a bunch of strange dreams Evy has been having. Exploring the tomb, they find the bracelet of the Scorpion King (The Rock).

Unfortunately, they aren't the only people looking for it. A group of diggers has found the mummy of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). They intend to revive him and allow him to kill the Scorpion King, thereby allowing him to control the Scorpion King's army and rule the Earth. But, in order to do all that, they need the bracelet.

Which is why the O'Connells are attacked when they return home to London. And since Alex has just put the bracelet on, he becomes a target. Joining forces with Evy's brother Jonathan (John Hannah) and Magi Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), they set out to save the world again. But in this race again time, will they win?

Having been a surprised fan of the first, I was looking forward to the second. I was disappointed the first time around, but a second viewing made me see it with new eyes. The plot, while a little complicated, is actually more original then I gave it credit for being. It definitely starts faster then the original did. The story actually holds together well and the acting is fine. Once again, this really isn't a horror movie but an action flick with super natural elements.

Having said that, I do have definite problems with this movie. The introduction of the reincarnation back story still makes me roll my eyes. It might help explain why everyone from the first film is back, but it slows the movie down at times, too.
