What more needs to be said about the finest detective drama series ever to grace the ITV schedules? Tireless Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and his eagerly faithful sidekick Sergeant Jones return for another slew of occasionally surreal and always bonkers adventures, in the fictional English county of Midsomer. Chocolate-box villages, all with a dark underbelly; furtive locals and crazed murderers with smiling faces inhabit this world, and the dynamic duo staunchly investigate and inevitably solve a series of crimes of passion, crimes of greed and crimes of sheer insanity amongst the leafy Midsomer copses (or should that be corpses?)

I have seen all of these stories at least once on TV, but I have found that I can revisit them again and again with a suitable break in-between. Midsomer Murders struck TV gold back in 1998 with its mix of unreal yet somehow recognisable settings and characters. John Nettles' phlegmatic DCI is the glue that holds the show together, as he and Jones seem to be the only working police detectives in the county! Sergeant Jones started off a little bland in comparison to predecessors Troy and Scott but has developed into the perfect Sancho Panza.

For the price this is a steal, so to speak; the box-set is beautifully packaged as a faux book, and sits nicely on the bookshelf, ready to be pulled down and savoured on those long winter nights. If you've never seen this programme I heartily recommend that you give it a go (and buy series one too!) Hole yourself up, pour a glass of Pinot Noir, grab a six-pack of Mars bars and indulge in a feast of Midsomer Madness.

Something on this line was said by one of the most famous "village detectives" of all times: Mrs. Marple.

And this is the essence of the Midsomer Murders. In the idyllic setting of the English countryside murder and deceit is lurking. Inspector Barnaby and his sergeant follow the leads and discover the truth. It is a quite, sometimes funny, never too bloody, not the typical US style of crime investigation with massive chases, but an interesting and captivating one. It is highly enjoyable and the actors create theirs characters in a great way. Barnaby's wife and daughter lend support and character to the cast and humanize the main characters.

I can not at all understand why the previous reviewer trashed the Midsommer Murders. I enjoyed every episode and I am very sure you will too.

Apart from a few little dubbing mismatches where Barnaby & Co speak but their mouths aren't quite in sync this is another great collection. Very watchable with Barnaby in fine form, would recommend to all Midsomer fans.
Be aware that if like me you've started collecting this type of box set as oppose to the newer style, they are not really interchangable because the sequence of episodes is different in each - stick to one or the other.
