CD Description

One of the leading English composers of his generation, Vaughan Williams went some way towards creating a specifically English musical idiom, influenced by his interest in folk-song yet underpinned by a personal vision and language. This is nowhere better expressed than in his superb cycle of Nine Symphonies. The 'London' Symphony features a rich medley of thematic material that suggests the varied life of the capital city. The Lark Ascending, which concludes this disc, is one of Vaughan Williams's most enduringly popular compositions.

In 2008 Vaughan Williams is the British composer to get to know. It's the 50th anniversary of his death. His shorter works are voted to the top of the Classics FM Hall of Fame. Two film documentaries about him have appeared on TV so far this year. He will be a featured composer as this years Proms.

It's no surprise that the record companies are rolling out `Best of' discs and sets this year.

Of those released so far this is the best. Naxos have an mainly excellent Vaughan Williams catalogue. Especially in his Symphonies, his songs and his chamber music. They present us with one disc with a generous 79 minutes of music.

The focus is on his best known works. Indeed `The Best Known Vaughan Williams' would be a better title for the CD. This is the composer at his most English, his most melodic, his most `pastoral'. The more modern, more violent and more searching side of his composition is not represented. No early modernism of the 4th Symphony, no violence of the 6th Symphony, no deep mysticism of the Flos Campi Suite or The Sancta Civitas Oratorio (admittedly the last work has yet to be recorded by Naxos).

Never mind, what is here is decently recorded, some of it excellently so.

Do I have any gripes? Actually yes - why put parts of works on the disc? Why put one section of the First Symphony? Why not replace it with the equally good (and well recorded by Naxos) similar orchestra and chorus work from the same time `Towards an Unknown Region'. Why - even worse - 2 `extracts' - not even whole movements or works. An extract of the first movement of the London Symphony - why not it's complete highly original Scherzo movement? And why half of Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus?

My advice is this -

If you want to a disc of Vaughan Williams early orchestral works - get one - there are plenty out there.

If you want to explore Vaughan Williams songs buy one of Naxos excellent discs of them - they are only a fiver a throw.

If you want the symphonies buy some of the whole discs - once again cheap for good quality on Naxos - or Naxos' recently released box set of the complete symphonies. It won't break the bank.

This is a good disc as far as it goes - I'm just not sure who it's for.
