Product Description

CD Description

Apples & Snakes Twofive: Vinyl To Download celebrates 25 years of pioneering the UK's spoken word scene with a stunning new album that covers poetry, spoken word, comedy, theatre, hip-hop, jazz-soul and grime. Starring a selection of leading artists and musicians including Ty, Salena Godden, Roger Robinson, Charlie Dark, John Hegley, Jean "Binta" Breeze, Francesca Beard, Malika Booker, Polarbear and Michael Rosen, among others, the album has been produced by the inimitable Drew Horley (Ty, De La Soul, Natalie Williams) alongside a selection of young producers. The album is a unique state-of-the-nation commentary on multi-cultural Britain that combines astute storytelling with a joyful and visceral musical experience. Words and song are underscored by Drew's beats to create a unique genre-bending musical tornado that demonstrates the breadth of the scene that Apples & Snakes has nurtured. Twofive brandishes top names and showcases the stars of tomorrow, demonstrating how far Apples & Snakes have come from the back room of a Fitzrovia pub in the early '80s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and Inspiring, 5 Aug 2008
Storytelling - via dynamic deliverance - is an oral tradition rooted in almost every culture.

It's an ancient art form that unites, inspires, and thus deserves to be remixed with modern reality and dished out with a sprinkling of relatable twists. Twofive does just this. It showcases a vast array of spoken word poets, who blur the boundaries between music categories and challenge rigid assumptions about what poetry is. With influences from comedy to music styles like jazz and rap, it's a delightful mixed bag.

As a commentary on contemporary Britain, the album touches upon multiculturalism, superficiality, the battle between artistic ambition and the droning reality of daily life, and more... Saying that, for each socially-conscious or introspective piece you'll find another light-hearted track to sit back and chill to. Twofive is incredibly inclusive, with something for everyone.

Star of the flow, PolarBear, offers 'Front to Back', a bitter-sweet cocktail of gritty realism and beautiful lyricism. The former emcee expertly combines the harsh facts of everyday living with philosophical thinking. This technique lets him reflect on how he has lived his life 'front to back'. Having broken the cycle of routine he can finally satisfy his creative talent through spoken word. PolarBear's understated charm fused with brilliant hip-hop inspired rhyming make this song at once edgy and thought-provoking.

Malika Booker is a master of atmosphere and tone. Her steady, almost hypnotic deliverance of 'It's' will reach into your conciousness until it is impossible not to be drawn into the world she describes. 'It's' paints a picture of the spoken word scene that perfectly encapsulates some of its values, including voice and weaving mental connections between people (themes laced throughout Twofive).

The raw energy and sharp lyrics of rapper Ty, and several sensitive, well-crafted poems also make Twofive a worthwhile purchase for any freethinker.
