Synopsis

David Norton is used to being in control. As a best-selling author, he decides the fate of his characters; his heroes, his villains, their lives and deaths. But what happens when his fictional world becomes all too real? When David arrives in an idyllic Mediterranean island for a conference, his fiancee receives a strange call and jumps to her death from their hotel balcony. As he begins piecing answers together, people start inexplicably committing suicide all around him. Now David has become the reluctant hero of his own living story, and this time he has no idea how it will end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not even David Kelly can save this one., 4 Oct 2009
By Quackser (Ireland) - See all my reviews
There's a lot of really good Spanish genre movies around these days. Unfortunately this isn't one of them. There's an interesting set-up: a science fiction writer becomes enmeshed in what seems to be the plot of one of his own novels. But the film's attempts to spin this idea into a story are hamstrung by an inbility to bring any of the characters to life in a way that might lead us to make an emotional investment in them. There is a mystery and it does lead to a revelation of What's Really Going On, but the film goes around the houses so many times with its set-ups and its pay-offs that, by half way, it's hard to care where it's all leading. Finally, the Big Reveal requires so much talking to get its point made that whatever goodwill the viewer retains towards the picture just fizzles away. And then there's still the Big Finish to come; plenty of time for the film to finish digging its own grave and jump into it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why use an off switch when a bullet will do?, 24 May 2009
By sft (UK) - See all my reviews
This is a moderately successful thriller that fails to fulfill its promise for a number of reasons. The plot could have been developed more; as it stands it's rather formulaic. With the exception of Timothy Hutton, who is good throughout, the cast lack conviction. Lucia Jimenez in particular is unconvincing in her role as the embattled female lead. But the main reason this movie is less successful than it might have been is the use of Mallorca as the location. Although the movie aspires to darkness the Balearic Islands are totally unable to provide the necessary atmosphere. The settings used are just too beautiful and idyllic. A rainy New York, or even Madrid, would have been better suited to this material. Despite these flaws the direction is assured, the pacing is good, and Monzon maintains tension reasonably well. The Kovak Box is not a bad movie; it's just that it could have been much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth watching, 28 April 2009
Novelist David Norton (Timothy Hutton) flies into Majorca with his girlfriend to speak at a conference on writing. As they settle in their hotel room, she for no reason jumps off the room's balcony. While he grieves beside his dieing love in hospital, in the next bed is a young woman Silvia (Lucia Jimenez), who also tried to commit suicide by jumping out of a bedroom window, only to be saved by the shop awning below.

Released from hospital Silvia is attacked in her hotel bedroom, where a man tries to cut open the side of her neck. but the paramedic who attends her does not believes her. Trying to get off the Island an emotional Silvia tries unsuccessfully to get a flight out and is arrested. David's also at the airport about to leave when a man steals his ticket.

Silvia escapes from the police when someone kills themself by jumping off one of the terminals upper floors into the shallow water pool below. David sees this, AND the distraught Silvia running away. He goes after her, finding her collapsed outside on the path.

When Silvia wakes she is in an airport hotel room...

...and David tells her about his first novel, a future world people suddenly start committing suicide.

A joint Spanish/English production with the usual small European budget. This would have been a much slicker production if it had been a Hollywood film with say, Nick Cage in the lead role, and I would not be surprised if in a few years Hollywood does remake it. But this is a good film. David Kelly for once gets a role to get his teeth into away from the comedy Irishman he usually has to play to be the evil scientist.

This is worth seeing, I first saw it on late night TV as I was about to go to bed, and while I was tired, I had to stay up and see it the end. I had to find out why? and could he save the girl? Then I had to buy the dvd to see how it started. It's worth its five stars.
