After the slightly disappointing "Mercenary" album this is a wellcome return to form for the good Doctor.This album sees him offering a spicey gumbo of pop,jazz,soul,funk,blues and a hint of voodoo.If you liked the "Creole moon" album then you'll love this one.Like most of his albums these days there is a sprinkling of guest stars like Eric Clapton,Willie Nelson and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard to add to the mix.The album title gives you a clue as to the basis of the songs for this album with most of them penned by Mac himself.The pick of the album is in fact the title track "The city that..." which is a slow voodoish blues with Dr john digging deep for some real feeling and "Dream warrior" is a voodoish funk with a nice tight rhythm.Songs like "Landgrab" and "My people need.." are about New Orleans with the "My people.." giving you a taste of 2nd line New Orleans jazz to add to the already varied mix.Trumpeter Blanchard guests on "We gettin there" (another New Orleans piece) and plays a wavering solo over the choruses and also appears on "Land Grab" playing a nice solo over a piece of what i would describe as space age funk !The high points are too numerous to mention in what is one of the Doc's best albums in recent years.Really though,this is an album about New Orleans, a city that Mr Rebennack loves so much and it shows in the thoughtfully penned tunes of his.So show him you care and support him by buying this great album.If your'e not already a fan then get yourself aquainted now.Play twice a day until you start to feel better just as the Doctor ordered.

Nice stuff, beautifully played, but to be perfectly honest not the strongest set from the good doctor. Little disappointed to recognise quite a lote of the frills and riffs from previous albums. I buy everything Mac puts out, and if you also a fan you'll like this - pretty much in the vein of Creole Moon. The last album that totally blew me away was Duke Elegant and that's going back a few years.

I prefer the solo piano stuff. Saw him live at the O2 and the music sounded better there than the recording.
