Amazon.co.uk Review

When history looks back on The Pigeon Detectives, will they be seen as anything more significant than a These Animal Men or Shed Seven to Kaiser Chiefs' Blur? Their debut album, Wait for Me, achieved remarkable success in the bizarre, never-ending post-Libertines vacuum with a string of undoubtedly infectious and direct bouts of rabble-raising indie-fuzz. But lining up alongside The Wombats, The View, The Enemy, Dirty Pretty Things, The Courteeners et al, minions chipping away at the same rock-face, there are gems—occasionally, of course there are--but there's also an inevitable mountain of sediment. And herein lies the problem for their typically difficult second album Emergency. While their approach may have matured a little, with "This Is an Emergency" bouncing on the Franz Ferdinand springboard and "Keep Oo Your Dress" having a bit of an Idlewild complexion rather than just plundering and shouting over Up the Bracket, the album has trouble lifting its head much above the parapet. "She's Gone", which has as much in common with Green Day's buffed punk-pop as contemporary UK strands, and the mid-pace Kaisers-esque "Love You for a Day (Hate You for a Week)" are perfectly affable, serviceable Britpop, but the sirens are not blaring this time. There are scattered fires, but they'll probably burn out on their own. No need to call 999. --James Berry

CD Description

After an exceedingly popular first LP (2007's 'Wait For Me') cemented Leeds-based indie rockers The Pigeon Detectives' arrival on the scene, their swift follow-up 'Emergency' brings the same vibrancy and energy to their guitar-led pop songs. The first single from the album, 'This Is Not An Emergency', delivers all one might expect from the band, a short, sharp thrill of slammed guitar strings and a massive chorus. Produced by Stephen Street (who previously worked with Blur, The Smiths and Babyshambles) and released on the indie favourite Dance To The Radio label, 'Emergency' captures the sound of a brash band who are very much looking towards their next release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phew, Curse of the dull second album avoided, 28 May 2008
By Adam (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
I was worried there. Just as I thought I'd outgrown indie with its troop of dull soundalike bands, the Pigeon Detective's first album was just a bit too good to dismiss with the rest of them. And I had a horrible feeling this album would be a copycat of that and they would be thrown out as quickly as the top 40s flirtation with indie had been. But its not. The first two songs are good but don't raise any hopes. But 'Keep on your dress' and 'Don't you wanna find out?' show how this band has matured and endeavoured to evolve as a band while remaining true to their fans. And the rest of the album is just as good. The lyrics are as keen as they were in 'Take Her Back' and the guitars as crazy as they were all throughout the last album. The songs are more distinguishable, having different tempos and different guitar sounds, perhaps there could be a few singles out of this. The last album had a habit of merging into one sound. I like this band and have a feeling they'll be around for a few years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Carry On Detectives, 10 Jun 2008
By Robert P. Splaine "mrbobsltd" (pattaya) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
There is a subtle difference in the 1st Cd & the latest. Couldn't see me playing the 1st CD, followed by the second. Not to say that neither are sheer brilliance. Trouble with what the Pigeon's have done is the
ABC syndrome. Their 1st cd could not be bettered, QUITE SIMPLY...
But were here to review the 2nd one.
It has classic tracks, will have the audience going wild when the first riff of song starts..."Nothing to do with you", is heart felt, if you cant relate to this track you wont like the Cd. You have to have this cd if your a pigeon fan. If you listen to this CD first, then go onto the 1st...you'll be in heaven.
Well done.. More please..

4.0 out of 5 stars good - but not as good as Wait for Me, 22 Jun 2008
By S. Tuck "bozibo" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first album was new and had a rawness to it which made it great. This album is good but the songs are not as catchy. I've a feeling they'll grow on me! Still worth the money though.
