Product Description

CD Description

North Carolina natives and one of Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle's favourite bands, Bowerbirds specialise in stripped-down, accordion-led folk. Forming after the disbanding of a previous act in which singer Phil Moore and accordionist Beth Tacular were members, the band has met with much critical acclaim for their synthesis of authentic folk and popmelodies. 'Hymns For A Dark Horse' is, musically, indebted to contemporary folk artists such as James Yorkston and Devendra Banhart, but still retains an almost Appalachian charm that Bowerbirds have made their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Folk-Pop, 4 Feb 2009
By T. Maisey (Warwick, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Simple arrangements, organic sounds and great songs are what this band are all about. The production is relatively raw but rich, and the vocal work isn't stellar, but what it lacks in technical polish it makes up for in beautifully emotive delivery.

The songs deftly avoid cliche, tired chord progressions and boring arrangement, a danger for bands of this simple folky nature. There isn't really a weak song here, and Bowerbirds achieve a great deal of variety considering their relatively limited selection of instrumentation.

If you like good folk, you'll love this. And if you love this, check out other bands such as Breathe Owl Breathe, Phosphorescent, Vetiver and last year's folk darlings Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes.

Heard some of this album on the web site An Aquarium Drunkard and had to buy it. A good alternative album.
