DVD Description

Freezing is a modern, urban comedy about what happens when fame and promise start to fade away.

Elizabeth is American and an Oscar–nominated actress who was discovered by Robert Redford. She's acted in numerous successful films with people like Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Robert de Niro. That was then.

Now she lives in a West London suburb with her publishing husband Matt. She spends a lot of time worrying about where the next job will come from. So does Matt because he's just been replaced by his assistant at the publishing firm where he worked for 15 years.

As a result – and for the first time in their marriage – Matt and Elizabeth now have to spend their days together at home – two freelancers seeking work.

Freezing has a stellar cast including Hugh Bonneville as Matt, Elizabeth McGovern as Elizabeth, Tom Hollander as Leon and Ben Miles as Stephen, with cameos from Richard E Grant, Joely Richardson and Alan Yentob.

Written by James Wood, directed by Simon Curtis and produced by Kenton Allen and Simon Curtis. It was piloted on BBC 4 and aired on BBC 2 over three episodes in February 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Twist on a Well Used Idea..., 18 April 2008
By simonpeggfan (Maidenhead UK) - See all my reviews

There's many similarities with "Curb your Enthusiasm" and "Lead Balloon" in this sitcom about a book publisher who's been let go by his firm and spending his time at home working on his novel. At the same time, his wife struggles to find rewarding work as actress despite being previously Oscar nominated.

So far so good - plenty of comedy of misunderstanding, the stress of the modern world, a host of cameos from real life stars etc. But there's a third key part to this mix - Leon the agent, the publisher's oldest friend.

Tom Hollander's performance as the bullying yet pathetic agent is a joy to watch, and if there's a criticism of the show it's that Leon should have been the key character. Whilst there's plenty of comedy from the rest of the cast it's Hollander's pieces that leave you crying with laughter.

With only 3 episodes made so far, here's hoping that a new series is made with much more of the fantastic Leon.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Please!, 7 Oct 2008

Perhaps I am biased, for I am a big Tom Hollander fan. Freezing was great! How can a character like Leon be both despicable and lovable simultaneously? They should definitely consider doing more episodes. After all who would not want to see what happens when they all go to LA to visit Elizabeth's parents for Christmas?
