If you've been enjoying Theme Time Radio Hour then you might want to track down some of the music from the series. Ace have released an excellent authorised double CD package, and when you've bought that one you might want to consider this as a follow-up. There's not quite as good or as wide a musical selection here, presumably due to the selections being made from out of copyright material, but there is still a goodly amount of good music to be enjoyed. Worth having.

The second volume of the "Best of Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour" presents a wonderful collection of the music played on the show but not grouped in 'themes' as it was originally presented, although you could guess at the various categories. Amongst the great variety of sounds included we have blues represented by Muddy Waters, Otis Spamm, Guitar Slim etc; country featuring Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash etc; rock & roll with Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.

But the real joy of this collection are the R&B, rockabilly, western swing etc tracks that blur the boundaries between genres, tracks like "Pink Cadillac" by Sammy Masters, "3x7=21" by Jewel King and "Radio Boogie" by L. C. Smith. As well as classics like "Folson Prison Blues" and "Bad, bad whiskey" there are also a number of rare R&B originals like Billy Emerson's "Every woman I know" (crazy about an automobile) and the wonderful "Drown in my own tears" by Lula Reed. Add to this some real one-offs like Dirty Red's "Mother Fuyer" which harks back to the dirty dozens and anticipates gangster rap by 30-odd years. And although the majority of the music here is "Americana" there are also a couple of nice Caribbean songs - "Jamaica Hurricane" by Lord Beginner and the fantastic "Zombie Jamboree" by Charmer.
This is a marvelous compilation that represents the tremendous variety in American popular music over the years. I think that it is best listened to on 'random' so that - in the spirit of the radio show -you don't know what track is coming up next.

This is a series which could go on forever but there's at least 2 areas of music not yet covered and that's the British Invasion and High School Pop.
Dylan of course had nothing to do with high school which was in its infancy even when Bobby Vee fired him.
As the idea with Theme Time Radio is to select songs with relevant titles to the episode rather than genres of music it all comes down to just how much Dylan rates a song.And with such a wide range covered there's bound to be a few you wish he'd never heard.
