Diao arrives in town with the help of three Karate experts lead by Kita to exact revenge on the master Li who banished him. After a brutal fight vertually all the students are killed aswell as Li, however the young Lei Ming survives, vowing revenge.

This is notable for two reasons, the first been this was the original unarmed combat martial arts movie. The second is this was Jimmy Wang's final film for Shaw Brothers before he left the production company to make his own movies elsewhere.

Jimmy Wang writes, directs and stars in this very violent Kung Fu movie that is fast paced and exciting from the start to the finish, Wang is defiantly a better actor than he is director. Here we have far to much super quick editing, fast zooms and shaky camera-work.

Wang is a good hero as he plays the lead Lei Ming. He is a honourable character who trains himself in the styles required to defeat Karate. He, burns his hands in hot ash, goes running with weights around his legs and does his own version of the high jump. The bad guys are played by Hsiung Chao as the banished Diao who returns to test out his Judo style against the traditional Kung Fu. Once he has taken control he opens up his own corrupt gambling business, where the house always wins. Kita the Karate expert is played by Shaw Brothers regular bad guy Lo Leih, he and his two companions look a lot like vampires with there pale skin and black attire.

The fight scenes are vertually all hand to hand with no use of weapons, which would become very popular are the success of this movie. Some of the fights are let down by the quick editing but some are very good. The best been when Jimmy Wang takes out Diao's henchmen in his gambling den and other where he takes out a group of samurai in the long grass.

Wang Yu stars and directs this impressive early Shaws classic....yes, the fights may be clunky by later standards but the story stays interesting throughout with some good camera placement by Yu, (underrated as a director I always thought)..and the Japanese villains are great (King Boxer Lo Lieh is one of them) very comic booky! Highly recommended, this is the German disc (superb 23.5 transfer) with English audio and subs on the disc! Buy it!!!
