Lucky enough to have lived with this since the limited private press I can attest to its perfect distillation of all that is psych/wyrd/acid/call-it-what-you-will folk.
The passion and attention to detail separates the album from pastiche making it seem more like a long lost relic vying for a spot with Trees' 'On The Shore' & Fairport's 'Liege & Lief' in the pantheon of great folk rock.
It would be churlish to single out individual tracks - each one is as natural as breathing, ranging from beautiful trad sounds to Sunno)))esque drone & sitar ragas. As disparate as these influences may sound, it all hangs together beautifully creating a peerless bucolic soundtrack.
An essential listen for those keeping an eye (and ear) on the progression of the folk tradition.

Existing somewhere between The Children's Film Foundation and the experimental music of the pagan horrors, The Owl Service do Alan Garner a, by-default, favour, by reminding a dizzy English populous that we do have a sound. A great sound. The quiet sound of ripe corn popping, and August woods aching. I just wish The Bear Ghost had made an appearance. Such lovely drowning synth. Little grumbles from the woods. This IS the folk album of 69. Get it now, while it's old. Old Nancy will make you struggle with a pear otherwise.

With "A Garland of Song" The Owl Service may well have come up with the album 2008 is crying out for.

The title track welcomes you with the enticing "These are instruments of joy, that we play for you..." The next 40 minutes do not disappoint.

As well as the hypnotic opener, other highlights include "Katie Cruel" and the joyous "Apple Tree Man".

Take a wander through this collection of inspired & inspiring tracks and you will soon realise why T.O.S. can be the British act that finally brings the revival folk scene to the masses.
