Synopsis

A man regains consciousness at the bottom of a deep, dark cave with no recollection of how he got there--much less what happened to the dead man beside him. His only hope of escape is to head towards the surface through a seemingly never-ending network of tunnels inhabited by strange and terrifying creatures. It's here in the subterranean depths that Tolbiac (Clovis Cornillac, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT) discovers the existence of a mysterious society known only as Eden Log. Franck Vestiel's futuristic thriller boasts some wonderfully atmospheric visuals that call to mind the works of Luc Besson, Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and early Darren Aronofsky.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretentious, moi?, 10 Jan 2009
By Mr. David Halliday (Ilkeston Derbyshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
A man wakes up somewhere underground, covered in dirt, lost & disorientated. He searches for answers, chased by monsters, meeting others & bit by bit making his way up to the surface, collecting bits of information as he goes.
This is something of a throwback to the cult French post-apocalyptic films 'Themrock' & 'Le dernier'. All black and white chic & heavy on the symbolism.
As this unfolds the whole picture is a pretty potty one but the extremes we will go to to power our cities & cars at the expense of 3rd world nations is simply taken a step or two further.
The script is limited to say the least & the leads character seems to have few expressions to his range but this expands as his knowledge increases & he changes.
The brooding B&W scene is very dark but helps give a sense of oppression & mystery to what is a tight budget set.
The difficulty with this is the films refusal to be placed, it's not a horror, sci-fi, thriller or a mystery but rather it is a little of all of them.
I watched this with my son-in-law,( Steve is not one for giving a film long before switching off), & we have very different tastes in film but we both enjoyed it & were busy trying to work out what the hell was going on! We agreed that it was worth a watch and certainly entertained but it's doubtful we'd watch it again.
Worth a look but not for action heads, those who hate subtitles or B&W but if you are patient & enjoy looking for subtext and prefer not to be spoon fed a storyline then give this a go.

2.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity , 23 Dec 2008
By I. R. Kerr (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Contains possible spoilers.
This film divides opinions and, whilst I appreciate both points of view, in my eyes it is just too arty and takes too long to get the message across. An hour into this film the female lead asks what is going on, unfortunately it's a fair while before we get an inkling ourselves.
After the opening quote from Genesis "So the Lord God banished him from the garden of Eden to serve the ground from which he had been taken", which refers to Adam's banishment from Eden, we see Tolbiac emerge from the mire in an underground cavern, had he been thrown out of some paradise as well?
That opening scene had some potential, but the story went off in a different direction to any of those I hoped it would be heading in.
His journey takes him through dark tunnels, up stairs, past machinery, a daft scene where he meets a figure in a space suit on a weird harness system, more tunnels....up more stairs, into caves whilst fighting off guards in biohazard style suits as well as strange humanoid creatures on his mission to reach the surface. The secret when it was eventually revealed was a real let down.
I have no particular axe to grind with slow moving stories when they lead to a decent ending or to well made art pictures but, to me, this was neither. It's not the worst film I have seen by any means but I don't think I will be giving it another viewing for some time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique, 10 Aug 2008
I disagree with other reviewers who might not have taken the time to actually watch this film properly. In the dark. It IS slow, but since when does the telling of a good story depend entirely how fast it is told? I did think quite early on that it reminded me of a survival horror game - a genre I enjoy. If the acting had not been as good, then the film might have failed to hit the mark. Clovi is entirely convincing as being totally in the dark (literally) - as is the audience. I was stunned by the visuals but with the haunting musical score provided an immersive experience. I intend to buy this dvd as a seminal work. Note that just 3 minutes of this film encouraged many international distributors to sign up at Cannes.

This film is very, very strange. If that aint your taste, give it a miss. Personaly I loved it, but I've got a thing for the inexplicably surreal.
