Product Description

Review

James Sinclair has been a dedicated Ives scholar and performer for more than 30 years, which means this CD has to be something special... Vintage Ives, all played with completely idiomatic feeling. --Gramophone

5.0 out of 5 stars Ives Orchestral Sets, 15 Jun 2009
By Mr. A. R. Boyes (Newcastle, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These performances are the product of much research and a great deal of devotion to the composer's works on the part of the conductor James Sinclair. The first set is the more paired down chamber version. The performance is excellent though I prefer the full orchestral version. Both vwersion show that Ives was a very capable orchestrator and his cacophonies are calculated and not unintended chaos.

The second set has the wonderful Hanover Square piece as a finale. The choir is not over intrusive here and the balance is just right.

The third set is a world premiere having being lovingly reconstructed. Whilst there is much that is familiar to Ives listeners here the music is more austere and reserved. There is much tonal ambiguity but less conflict and the finale is particularly elusive. There is, perhaps a strong religious element in this work and a suggestion that Ives's energies may have been on the wane. It is still a satisfying work and to have all three sets wonderfully performed on one cd is a marvellous addition to the Ives library of recordings.
