5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Folk Album, 13 Sep 2008
By E. C Goodstein (Northern CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A brilliant album. Oates here creates real folk magic. If many of the songs are dour, there's still a kind of
lilting lightness to her voice and the slight Celtic overtones are just enough and just right. Also she pays attention to the lyrics, including the upbeat ones & fine timing & subtle mood changes in the vocals. Kudos to the production/arrangement ideas of Phil Beer of Show of Hands too (& the ideas here are not the folk rock of SOH either!). This album is also I think an improvement over her excellent first one. 'Young Donald' and "Billy Reilly' alone are devastating, deeply moving songs that almost alone make the album worth getting. But all the rest are wonderful too. I think if she keeps up like this, Oates can be mentioned in the same breath as June Tabor, Karine Polwart and even Sandy Denny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Kate Rusby!, 27 Dec 2008
If you think that Kate Rusby has become a tad formulaic and want to find real heart, soul and emotion, then look no further than this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Airy, floaty, beautiful..., 30 Aug 2009
By 'Whiskers (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews
I was lucky enough to go to a workshop hosted by Jackie Oates at a small folk festival in 2009 and was captivated by her beautiful voice, not to mention cracking fiddle skills as well. Absolutely love this album, the voice is so effortless (in real life as well as on this album) and the whole record feels very honest and open and (most importantly) true to folk. In particular I love Jackie's version of 'Lark in the Morning', which fits so much better with the sentiment of the verses than Steeleye Span's version. 'Goodbye To Beesands And To Magic' is an awesome fiddle tune that just builds into something more and more beautiful the longer it goes on for and is contemporary as well retaining something traditional. For the real traditionalists, the two tunes 'Tobias The Grinder' and 'Our Trip To Croyde' get your feet tapping as much as anything lively can do. I could go on about the rest as well, but to sum up quickly this is a great album for any folk-lover to own and you're unlikely to be disappointed by your purchase. I'm looking forward to her next album already.
