This is another closet classic from husband and wife team Steve Tannen and Deb Talan - The Weepies. If you liked their previous effort 2006's `Say I am You' (and if you haven't heard that you absolutely should), this is in the same folk-pop vein. Slightly richer production, but with the primary emphasis on glorious tunes, exquisite harmony, and emotional clout from lyrics that can stop you dead. This is a very clever record in sticking with the simplicity of approach which belies the skill they have. The musical pedigree of both Tannen and Talan (they were well regarded performers in their own right before they teamed up - check out the Hummingfish) is evident here. So - some reference points for those who are not familiar. Everything But the Girl (pre dance remix phase) meets Simon and Garfunkel is about as close as I can get. - In fact if you know the formers version of `Only Living Boy in New York' you have got the general idea. All in all rather timeless pop, which works on all levels. Deserves a much wider audience. I can't quite give it 5 stars - because I still prefer the last record. But give it time - I think this might just be even better.
