The only reason I saw `Drillbit Taylor' is because my friend has a bit of a thing for Owen Wilson, not expecting much but fulfilling my duties as a friend I begrudgingly went along. What I did not expect was to see a genuinely funny and enjoyable film. Ok, so the plots not overly intelligent, three newcomers to high school are being bullied, so they hire the services of a bodyguard: Drillbit Taylor (played by Owen Wilson). What we know, but the kids don't, is that Drillbit is actually unemployed and homeless and doesn't really know anything about being a bodyguard. This is where the majority of the comedy stems from; Drillbit's attempts to train the kids, in often bizarre ways frequently leads to laughs.
Admittedly the second half of the film slows down slightly, as we learn a message of friendship and standing up to bullies; but don't take this as a criticism of the film. Indeed this films genuine and heartfelt message, showcasing the plight of the outsider is what makes this film successful.

Not likely to win any awards, `Drillbit Taylor' is enjoyable escapism with plenty of laughs and a heart-warming message at the end.

In what is basically a comedy vehicle for Owen Wilson, the wonky-nosed star of The Dukes of Hazard, The Royal Tenenbaums and Zoolander plays the eponymous down and out army deserter, who answers an ad placed by three desperate high school nerds who are being victimized by the resident school bully. Wilson strolls through the film displaying his trademark dopey charm, and there are enough laugh out loud moments to make this a decent rental.

When Ryan and Wade manage to incur the wrath of a psychotic bully on their very first day of high school, they pool their money together and place an ad on the internet to hire a bodyguard to protect them. After interviewing several candidates they settle for Drillbit Taylor, who claims to be a master of martial arts, an ex-mercenary and cheap. The trouble is Drillbit is really a homeless beggar intent on scamming them out of their money and possessions in order to raise enough money to move to Canada.
This is predictable run of the mill fodder where you know after letting the boys down Drillbit is going to redeem himself and come good by the end of the film and even for this type of film it is well below average. Its biggest problem is that in parts it's a bit too risqué to be a kids film and far too juvenile to hold the attention of most adults and pretty much humourless throughout. Add to that an unoriginal and unbelievable plotline and an idiotic ending which seems to advocate that using violence to solve violence is the best option and a lesson which I'm guessing most parents wouldn't want their kids to be taught.
If you're looking for something that's a bit different to watch with the kids I would opt for Disney's "Holes" or "Problem Child", and if you're looking for something a bit more mature themed then check out "Blades Of Glory", "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and the superb "Step Brothers", but avoid this turkey.

I think that a movie critic feels almost obliged to pan this type of movie for reasons of professional credibility. In fact, it's a pretty enjoyable little romp which does pretty much what you'd expect from the trailers. Owen Wilson reprises his role as 'Owen Wilson', here playing a beach bum hired as a sort of bodyguard for some high school kids getting a hard time from the school bullies. It's all good fun and a perfectly decent way to pass an idle hour or so if there's nothing better on the box.

I had never heard of this film before i came across it on Amazon, and then i read some of the reviews saying it was boring and not very good. I decided to still buy it and give it ago and to be honest i thought it was great, it kind of reminded me of Diary Of A Wimpy Kid and it had some very funny moments. Dont be put off by the reviews its a great little comedy!

Not Owen Wilson at his best, and looking a little weary, but nevertheless a funny movie. Some children moving up to High School, find themselves treated as freaks by the school bully and his yobs. Taylor is a Walter Mitty type of character. His imagination, or rather his ability to tell lies superbly, coinvince the kids that he is ex-special forces and a master of the martial arts. In actual fact he is a tramp living in a cardboard box. Eventually he is exposed and the childrem nevertheless take on the bullies and whip them.
The action is nevertheless enjoyable and I am sure children would enjoy this one.
I must admit that he does make a great team with Ben Stiller, but on his own he lacked the applomb which comes from double teaming rapport.

Me and my sons love this film. Dad's harder to please. It's very funny, very American, full of wise guy smart talk and a couple of genuine belly laugh moments. The child actors have brilliant comic timing: it makes us smile very time we see it.
It's got a good anti bullying theme too, which we like in our house.

Warning: It has some violence in it, so do check that before you buy (youtube?), if you don't like that in the films your kids see... oh... and I think there's mild cussing. Can't remember. Plus you get to see Owen Wilson's bum, so again... if you don't want your kids seeing that sort of thing, this one isn't for you.
