Product Description

Laura Barkley (Judy Geeson) travels to a sleepy Spanish town to visit her sister, who is staying at an inn run by two religious sisters. But when she arrives she discovers that her sister has mysteriously disappeared. The two sisters, Marta and Veronica, tell Laura that her sister left suddenly but no one has seen her leave the village. Laura decides to stay at the inn whilst searching for her sister but soon discovers that the self-righteous sisters cannot bear the nakedness and promiscuity of young English holidaymakers. One by one, these pleasure seekers begin to disappear. Meanwhile, the sisters evening meals begin to take on an unusual flavour.... This deliciously deranged and atmospheric horror, which was shot entirely on location in Spain, is available on a UK DVD release for the very first time. Notable for it s stunning vistas, stylish direction and standout performances from its leads, it is a worthy addition to the classic horror genre. DVD Extras: Stills gallery and trailer.

Review

Aurora Bautista and Esperanza Roy play two sisters running an inn in Spain. Young, foreign girls come to visit but end up staying permanently. British actress Judy Geeson plays the sister of one of the girls who begins to put the pieces together of the horrors that have been going on at the inn. Director Eugenio Martin does quite an effective job with this film. It seems that the oldest sister Bautista was jilted on her wedding day by a young, pretty girl of a loose nature. Now, she is out to do God's work and rid the world of girls with loose morals and inappropriate attire. Both actresses playing the crazy sisters do stellar jobs playing off-key, psychotic women of very different natures. Bautista in particular gives a very commanding performance and is indeed very menacing. She also adds some pathos to her role. Martin builds suspense nicely and does several things very well. The use of religion as a tool of sexual repression was a thematic thread throughout. One scene has a girl die by accidentally falling in a pane of stained glass - a religious subject. When the body is removed a piece sticking in her has a bloody sword from the window stand in tact as to say this is the work of God. There are many other religious scenes and references used as well. The film is not particularly gory but there are some scenes that I found quite chilling. One with a baby as witness and then another of Geeson getting to know wine vats. The performers all do fine jobs, the direction is taut, and the script is convincing given the aforementioned two credits toward its credibility. The film does indeed have that European film from the 60's or 70's quality, but I truly am surprised that I had not heard much about this film beforehand. It is one of those minor gems you sometime are lucky enough to come across every now and then. --www.imdb.com

A very strange, dark and brooding film somewhat in the style of some of Pete Walkers offerings from the same period. Two sisters running a Spanish boarding house begin offing various nubile female, predominately English occupiers who have run foul of said hosts religious moral code. In truth it is one sister in particular, the other sister being weak willed and dominated by her puritannical sibling is coerced into going along with her wishes whilst herself partial to a bit of casual hanky-panky with the hotel handyman albeit terrified of her sibling finding out.
Judy Geeson is the sister of one of the 'disappeared' and soon notices a disturbing trend of young gals disapearing without warning and sets out to investigate further. It is all really well done. There isn't any great master plan, the killings just kind of happen, first by accident then it all seems to spiral out of control a bit though the underlying feeling is that the elder more sinister sister is certainly starting to get a charge out of carrying out 'God's work' in this form.
There are some great scenes. The elder sister after observing naked frolicking in the river runs through a thorny field as a form of self-flagellation, punishing herself whilst also enjoying the pain and feel of the thorns tearing her body. There is no real gore, but there is quite a bit of semi-nudeness and a nice little story underpinning it all. Most of the Spanish actors are dubbed English, the picture is a bit dark and grainy but it is a very interesting atmospheric romp. The only extras on the disc at this time are a series of previews of a number of similar 70's low budget films.

2015: UK blu ray release addendum.
The blu ray rectifies a number of flaws. The picture is superior generally, still a number of scratches, an odd darkening discolouration on occasion, but overall a sound solid picture. The audio is very present, considering the dubbed foley work employed. There is no subtitled original language, but then i guess the original had multiple actress languages. As it is, a distinct improvement over the dvd. No extras except a trailer. The film seems to be given short shrift, a spanish production to boost the tourist board of the time. Watching the film however would boost confessionals in catholic areas moreover, with such a direct religious critique. Worthy breasty slashy flick now improved with evident flaw and grain but tasting of the era. The UK blu ray reverts to a widescreen ratio that looks close to correct, where as the dvd does not.

Original dvd review:
Local colour, that seems to be the greatest use of filming on location, in what looks like a quaint realistic Spain. Theres a lot of local flavour, and a flair for making sunny shots as creepy as the shadowy ones.

The film print isn't perfect. In fact the dvd doesnt automatically jump to widescreen i had to prompt it & poke it about. Film quality is just above a VHS print certainly, but improves through the film. It was shot in Eastmancolour & this certainly looks & feels in keeping with the 1974 era, the same year as Vampyres by Jose Larraz. The flashes of nudity are also similar if less lustfully used as that blood n' breasts beauty.

Ok, some people laugh at dubbing. This however isn't half bad, not getting in the way. Plotwise the females who are clearly bonkers, in every meaning of that word, are playing a grand guignol version of a spanish catholic guilt trip.

A sort of proto-Hostel, where promiscuous gals are offed by two religious sisters who run a hotel, one of whom is partial to a bit of nooky with the handyman, while the other punishes herself with a run in the bushes when she gets turned on. Great stuff, with some gruesome kills and luscious ladies on display. Also known as 'It Happened At Nightmare Inn', a better title for a gruesome little treat.

"A candle for the devil" is a very interesting sexploitation. It could be called "Inn of blood". Young shameless girls are killed by the two female owners of an inn. Plenty of nudity mixed with bloody murders... Judy Geeson looks like always very beautifull ! Love her very much. Very sensitive in her acting. The last scene shows all her fragility ! The print is quite good. If you like this kind of stuff, buy this movie ! A little classic from the good old sexploitation times !

I absolutely LOVED THIS MOVIE! I had the edited version and liked it so much, I ordered this unedited version and just enjoyed it so much, I've seen it repeatedly and I never tire of the plot.

It's too bad movies today don't have this much allure and genuine acting. The sisters were crazy-good, if you know what I mean! Judy Geeson was good, but I liked the "bad" girls better!

Totally worth purchasing, especially if you like a good, solid plot and really good acting...a great 70s movie!

Directed by the man behind the classic Horror Express Candle for the Devil (more appropriately known in the US as It Happened at Nightmare Inn) was made in Spain (largely Madrid and El Paular) in 1973, featuring two God-fearing sisters who run a small hotel in a traditional Spanish village, They get a lot of English-speaking tourists but don't exactly approve of their more liberal ways, although the local men are somewhat more forgiving of course. An argument with one of their guests, who is attracting attention with some topless sunbathing, results in the girl's accidental death. Interpreting a divine message in the death they cover up the accident but don't reckon on the girl's sister arriving to meet her a day or so later. They let her stay at the hotel under the impression that the dead sister has already left of her own accord. The new arrival suspects something is amiss when another guest vanishes, and launches into her own investigation to find out what's going on in the sinister little equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle.

The film has a nice funereal atmosphere with a screwed-up pair of sisters at the centre of the mess of corpses that starts building up around them. They're not even what you might necessarily call 'evil' (however you want to argue the definition of that) - rather, they are misguided in their beliefs. There is a poignant reflection of this even in today's political climate as certain terrorist organisations around the world choose to kill off others simply because they do not comply with their own belief systems. It goes without saying that this kind of mind-set can also be found throughout history.
