Amazing quality blu-ray!, 26 Mar 2009
(Blu-ray review, not movie review)
Already seen the movie before buying the blu-ray, and the movie itself is one of my personal favourites, it's a very different romantic story that happens on a mental institution. I don't want to give away much, go see the movie or search for reviews on the internet.
Regarding the blu-ray edition, I was completely amazed by the image quality of this release, one of the best blu-ray I've ever seen, similar to Dark City in terms of quality. Very little noise but still very sharp picture, amazing colours, deep blacks, everything visual is top notch. Of course there are some scenes where you can notice a little soft image or a little more noise than usual, but overall very little. By comparison, the Oldboy blu-ray is far worse in terms of video quality.
In terms of sound, I don't have a system capable of giving a fair review, but it seems OK.
Only English subtitles, and the only really downside is the lack of extras. Still, lowering the rating of this blu-ray because of the lack of extras is not that fair considering the quality of the image in general.
Overall, a decent 5 star on my blu-ray collection.

Stylish Affair From Chan-wook Park, 10 Mar 2009
It's not every day a movie like this comes up - and it's a pity, as I'm a Cyborg (aka Saibogujiman kwenchana) is really stylish: and has a great storyline - and for once, the Oldboy director is taking a different turn, granted the scene with Cha Young-goon's fingers as guns would have fitted in nicely with Oldboy's style.
Cha Young-goon is a young woman who's not had it easy: her gran was taken away to a mental institution when Cha was very young. Not only that, but Cha's had delusions of being a cyborg when she was a young girl, and told her mother. She swore she would never say anything to anyone - but one day when her monotonous job at a radio factory just gets too much, she self-harms, puts in a power chord, and the rest is a blurry history.
She wakes up in the mental institute - where she meets a lot of similar people, and soon finds out that she will be friends with many, and her life will be different.
Interesting movie stylishly filmed, both Cha Young-goon and Shin Duk-cheon are great in this movie, played by Su-jeong Lim and Dal-su Oh respectively. I like the characters in the hospital too, especially the girl who eats everyone's lunch, and the guy who wears the mask. It's hard to follow though, and you need to concentrate, but I like the delusional views you get, which is probably what the doctors and nurses have to put up with every day from them. The scene where she uses her fingers to shoot the doctors is probably the best I've seen in ages.
The blu-ray is pretty good, but I did find it had a lot of motion blur, not sure if it was my equipment that is to blame. There's a lot of camera movement in this anyway, but they might have thought of upping the bitrate as this is only a BD25 disk. I think it could have been better with a BD-50 and a 40Mb/s bitrate. Also I found it's not the usual 24fps - it's 29fps which I thought was bizarre, as most blu-ray disks are at cinema speeds, rather than DVD or TV speeds. The TruHD soundtrack is amazing, and clear, you can hear dialogue well and the shooting scene is phenomenal sound wise.
There are no real extras to speak of, film notes and a trailer, which is disappointing. Was hoping for some commentaries from the director, or even a behind the scenes, but no, sadly not.
This is a good blu-ray, but it could have been better, the four stars are for the movie mainly.
Film: 4/5, Blu-Ray: 3/5 Transfer: 3/5
