4.0 out of 5 stars Tommy Cooper - A Unique Talent, 3 Feb 2009
By CoogarUK (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Tommy Cooper was a one-off. Not only a pure comic genius but actually a very accomplished magician too (although you could be forgiven for not entirely believing that from what's on show here).

It is unfortunate that this series concentrated more on showcasing his comedic talent. Further, the show's regular and 'special' guests seem to get as much airtime on stage as Tommy does. However, this DVD is pure unashamed retro-TV nostalgia, with the occasional glimpse of TC's genius shining through.

Buy this to see a showman at work. Watch as he 'works' the audience with ease.

The previous reviewer raises a fair point. However, this DVD deserves more than one star. Whilst maybe not fully deserving of the four stars I have awarded it either, the balance needed to be redressed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only for hard core Cooper fans, 18 Sep 2008
The best of dvds out there are the ones to get of Tommy Cooper. Being that I wasn't born until 1978 I never saw the original format of the Tommy Cooper tv shows. They are half an hour of Cooper sketches mixed with the most horrible, cheesy variety acts you will ever see. There are some Cooper gems in here but a lot of his sketches are very poor and the effects of heavy drinking can clearly be seen in his delivery. One sketch he repeated here that I have seen on another dvd is where he does an impression of 'a cockney'. It was hillarious when he did it before but here he doesn't make it clear who he is impersonating. He can't seem to do the voice and makes a total mess of it but not in the way that we all love Tommy to make a mess. Stick to the best of dvds. They are all classics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, oh dear..., 15 Aug 2009
Tommy Cooper was without doubt one of the UK best-loved entertainers.

Sadly this DVD release is one of those where we realise that sometimes things just aren't quite as good as we remembered them to be. It's not that they've dug up the cheapest, worst, isolated, early, forgotten clips in order to make a quick buck; Quite the opposite. This is mainstream Cooper - The complete series from Cooper's heyday (1978)... And it's awful.

Cooper was often credited with being a master conjuror who played it dumb to make it funny. He wasn't. Ask any professional magician if you don't believe me. The 'brilliant conjuror' theory is just an urban myth, but you can't deny that he was funny. He was brilliantly funny.

This DVD release is really only for hardcore Cooper fans, as it does require a sort of forgiving, generous spattering of allowance-making due to the lack of laughs and ham-fisted handling of some of the sketches.

Does it sound like I'm being a little unkind? Probably yes, but this is not for those who want remember Cooper as he should have been remembered: A funny physical man like a George Carl or a bumbling (and somewhat more sedate - and English) Jerry Lewis.

For those who want to remember Cooper in the best possible way, look for a 'Best Of' compilation. You'll find them here on Amazon.

Pass this one by and see him in the best possible light.
