Product Description

Description

Nigeria in the 1970's was a hotbed for a myriad of musical movements and hybrids. Asserting its fiercely independent spirit in the wake of colonial rule, the music centered on thecountry's largest metropolis, Lagos, grew to be as diverse as that of any major city in Europe or the U.S.A. Continuingthe Strut label's series of Nigeria-focused compilations, NIGERIA 70 LAGOS JUMP: ORIGINAL HEAVYWEIGHT AFROBEAT HIGHLIFE& AFRO PUNK unearths lesser-known musicians, many of whom continue to toil in the shadow of the larger-than-life figurehead of Afro-beat, Fela Kuti. While homegrown styles are represented (as in the upbeat juju of Sir Shina Peters), many of the most memorable cuts represent distinctly western-influenced fusions. Funk and soul-jazz influences play heavily inthe slick grooves of Peter King's "African Dialects", whileChief Checker's "Africa Irie" puts a West African spin on roots reggae.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars, 16 Oct 2009
5 stars - What a great album, a really interesting compilation of various styles (afro-beat, highlife, psych and a Nigerian take on reggae to name just a few) from Nigeria circa 1970. I've played the album through 5 or 6 times now, virtually every one of the tracks sounds great to me. I've been gradually purchasing quite a few of the 1960's/70's African CD's ('African Scream Contest', 'Legends of Benin', The 'Ethiopiques' series to name just a few of the better recent ones) and this compilation stands up there on a par with these excellent releases, particularly at the current bargain price...
The sleeve notes are also pretty good with a biography of each track/artist which is always appreciated, yes?
