Product Description
I'M A CYBORG, the latest film from the Korean director Park Chan-wook, is a madcap fantasy, screwball romance. Young-goon is admitted to a mental institution, believing herself a cyborg, she charges herself with a transistor radio. Il-soon a fellow inmate steals the other inmates' personality traits and believes he is fading and will one day turn into a dot. When Young-goon refuses to eat, Il-soon decides it's his job to get her on her feet again. This charming, tender and visually arresting film cements Park Chan-wook's reputation as one of the most gifted and playful filmmakers working today. An offbeat romantic comedy, I'M A CYBORG is a touching and highly inventive film from one of Korea's best known director's Park Chan-wook. This charming, tender, visually arresting film won the Alfred Bauer Prize for a work of particular innovation at the 2007 Berlin Film Festival.

Synopsis
Another original and stylish tale from South Korean director Chan-Wook Park (OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE) in which a young girl—who believes herself to be a defence robot—enters a psychiatric facility, where she meets other, similarly-deluded characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Surprise..., 25 Mar 2008
As a huge fan of both Park and Rain, I was very eager to see this film. If you are expecting a Park film along similar lines as the vengeance trilogy, then this is not the film for you. However, for the more open-minded, this is quite possibly one of the most romantic movies ever filmed.

Without spoiling the plot, it's hard to write an accurate overview of this film, however it is fair to say that it has two distinct halves. The first half of the film is quite comedic, and in contrast the second half is beautifully touching.

This film has received a fair bit of criticism for two straightforward reasons. Firstly, a lot of people who saw this film were familiar with Park's other movies and it is NOTHING like those films. I guess they were disappointed by that. Secondly, a lot of people didn't "get" the ending. I think the ending was fabulous, and if you have paid enough attention throughout the rest of the film, then I see no confusion. This isn't a Hollywood movie - not eveything is spelt out in black and white, and the ending requires you to think. If you can cope with that, then you'll be rewarded with a real sense of romanticism.

Surreal as the first half is, stick with it. And discover the use of a "rice megatron". I think that concept may be unique to this film!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rice and wires... , 12 Jun 2008

As a big fan of Park Chan-Wook's previous works, in particular 'Old Boy', I had a feeling this would be great, but it was great on a completely different level.
It is a most wonderful film to get lost in; at the risk of labelling this a 'quirky romantic comedy' it is an eclectic mix of fantasy, existentialism, love and relating to another person. This reminded me a little of 'You, Me And Everyone We Know' (Miranda July). You have to be open-minded here and really engage with the characters, perhaps humour them, for a fruitful experience. It's a subtle reminder of the hardships of life and finding your way, with a little nudge. A beautiful film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderland, 24 Jul 2008

This is Park's best movie imo. The action takes place in a mental hospital. The protagonist is a young girl who thinks she is a cyborg, and a patient who tries to "cure" her by using his and her imaginative powers. Like Lady Vengeance the film is visually stunning, and the use of CGI is wonderful. Also, this film is more on the comedy side than his earlier, even if the reality behind the games, dreams and illusions can seem disturbing and harsh as it touches upon themes like neuroses, anorexia and alienation. But above all it is a film about the power of imagination. Also the transfer on the Tartan DVD is really good. Strongly recommended!
