5.0 out of 5 stars ...the sky swallowed him up...leaving him with the only thing he craved...someone saying hi..., 13 Jun 2008
By Pmgoss "the" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
...I find these kinds of bands a joy and at the same time difficult to review...because it's easy to be descriptive but if I were to thoroughly analyze the music I wouldn't find much there...and that's the way I like it...

...the way I think of this album is like flying...you fly around the empty skys...the rush of wind in your ears producing feedback and squeaky sounds...every now and then you may fly into a storm and hear the low sinister hum of riffs or the grumble of a fuzzed up bass...but when you reach the storm...you fly as slowly as you can...because you're so scared of being swallowed up...in the end it's easier to accept your fate...and then it makes it more of an achievement to survive...

...all of the songs are very long...and truly feel like a gradual metamorphis as the title suggests "Skin Turns to Glass" would be very correct...because it feels like you are waiting for the impossible to happen...

...throughout the entire piece you are consumed by the music...waiting patiently for it to end...until the whole mood eats you up...and you never want it to end...or you'll feel so empty that you actually wait for it to come back to you...

...once you reach the song called "Slow Loss" there is nothing more accurate as you are very gradually saturated in this huge dark atmosphere for over ten minutes...in the end you think it'll never go away...but when it begins to fade...you feel your head getting heavy with thoughts...you have the urge to play the track again...but it would still take too long to kick in...then you play through the longest track "Untitled" hoping to find the answer to this track...but what you find is a new question entirely...

...this is for people that wish to listen to music that will consume them...saturate them...and become them...mainstream media would never play or recommend this...as this is a journey you must find without people poking you in the right direction...

4.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack For Dreamers., 31 Mar 2009
By S. Davitt (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If someone asked me to pick the soundtrack to my dreams, Nadja's entire discography would probably suffice in covering it. Wickedly imaginative is what Nadja are. Though much of the music seems quite simplistic, it would take an awful lot of patience, time and care to make something as stunning as the majority of Nadja's music. Skin Turns To Glass is no exception to the rule that Nadja create a very specific type of music that appeals to a very limited audience. If you're a fan of fast, furious and downright heavy music, look away now.

Nadja are the epitome of ambience. Slow but effective. Nadja ebbs and flows like the breeze over a field of wheat on a sunny summers day. Calm, collected and tranquil. It's easy to see that a lot of heart and soul went into making this particular full-length. Although vocals are limited, Nadja has the ability to speak volumes to the listening audience with precise notes and pleasing programming. It's the latter that the listener needs to pay particular attention to. The programming is the essence of Nadja. It swirls like a whirlpool in the background. Eating away at your soul. Distorted riffs of intention and intense melodies. Behind the fuzz and haze, the ambient drone prevails with divine synths and other worldly soundscapes.

The drums are somewhat lacking. Repetitive use of the cymbals are the main idea as far as they are concerned. Though much of the music tends to be somewhat repetitive, the drums lack the power or intensity to create much of a stir. This is unfortunate because Nadja use repetition well for the most part of the full-length. They have the ability to be able to harness repetition and use it effectively to make stunning soundscapes, which is the one element everyone can, and probably will enjoy. The lack of vocals may be problematic. A lot of people require vocals to be able to persistently listen to material. The vocals are used to draw their attention and maintain it, but seeming as Nadja don't have many vocal parts, Skin Turns To Glass may need a lot of persistence. Though the same could be said about every Nadja full-length.
