Product Description

Album Description

"Julian Perkins is a firm favourite with our audiences at Handel House. He combines an unflappable and personable manner with an expert knowledge of the Baroque era, and of Handel in particular." Handel House Museum, London

From performances for Trevor Pinnock at the Handel Halle Festival to a solo at the Paris Fashion Show for Alexander McQueeri, Julian Perkins pursues a diverse and demanding career. Primarily a Baroque and early Classical music specialist, he performs with leading singers, ensembles and opera companies in the UK and abroad, and directs The British Camerata and Morley Baroque Consort. As well as his busy schedule of performances as conductor and soloist, Julian Perkins writes on music and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music.

This is the first complete recording of James Nares's eight brilliant harpsichord suites of 1747. Organist of the Chapel Royal, James Nares epitomizes the late English Baroque style; one which takes after the keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti and Thomas Arne.

Thanks to the generosity of The Royal Collection, much of this music was recorded using the Queen's rare and newly-restored Shudi harpsichord at Kew Palace. Built in 1740, this harpsichord is one of Schudi's earliest and most lavish instruments. It is perhaps the only harpsichord whose quills are taken from the ravens of the Tower of London! Julian Perkins also plays on an original Kirckman harpsichord, generously loaned to the Royal Academy of Music by the Beare family.

Despite the international popularity of English harpsichords throughout the eighteenth century, not only these instruments but also late English Baroque music in general are now largely ignored. A full appreciation of Handel's artistry requires the listener to cherish the English culture with which he was fully involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handel in good company, 28 April 2009
By R. Whitaker (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's marvellous to hear Handel surrounded by a contemporary keyboard composer whom he admired, an English devotee of Domenico Scarlatti, James Nares. My favourite Nares sett is currently number 4 in F Major, but this changes by the week, performed by Julian Perkins with considerable dash, delicacy and bravura on two stunning instruments made in rival workshops in the great Flemish tradition.
Europe really had something once.
